Potassium has to stay in a tight range for nerves and muscles to work properly, and the kidneys manage most of that balance. As blood moves through each nephron, potassium enters the early filtered fluid. Later sections of the nephron take over and decide how much should stay and how much should leave the body. Special cells in the distant parts of the tubules use energy powered pumps to guide these adjustments with precision. When potassium levels in the blood climb too high, these cells push extra potassium into the forming urine. They use their pumps to move it out of the bloodstream and into the tubule so it can be removed. When potassium levels drop, they switch directions and pull potassium back into the blood to prevent dangerous lows. This back and forth control keeps the body from drifting into risky levels. Hormones such as aldosterone help fine tune this process by increasing the activity of the potassium moving pumps. With constant monitoring and rapid responses, the kidneys keep potassium stable all day, protecting the heart and muscles from sudden and harmful shifts. | Doctor ASKY |
