In this interesting conversation, our co-founder Zena asks Amy, our Clinical Director and Holistic Physiotherapist, about the different manual therapies she is trained in. Using the example of tension in the right side of the head or neck area, Amy shares how an assessment helps guide which techniques may be most appropriate for a person’s needs, highlighting that the cause for a symptom, such as a persistent tension headache, varies from person to person and, as such, the importance of a personalized, integrative approach to healthcare.
So does Amy integrate in her approach? Physiotherapy, Visceral Manipulation, and Craniosacral Therapy.
Physiotherapy focuses on muscles and joints. This may include working with areas that feel tight, supporting joint mobility, and using gentle myofascial techniques to encourage ease of movement.
Visceral manipulation explores how internal structures and connective tissues relate to surrounding areas. Practitioners may look at tension patterns in deeper tissues and how these patterns influence overall movement and comfort.
Craniosacral therapy brings attention to subtle rhythms and restrictions within the cranial and spinal system. It may involve working with cranial bones or following a full-body protocol to support overall regulation. When someone feels highly sensitive or when the system feels overwhelmed, practitioners certified in Craniosacral Therapy may choose to start with this gentler approach before considering deeper manual work.
Each of the above lens looks at a different layer of the body: Muscles. Organs. Nervous system.
It’s never about forcing a correction. It’s about listening, understanding and meeting the body where it is.
