Treatments for Thinning Hair: Do They Work?

So you're never going to have a thick, lush head of hair again. But at least you'd like to hang on to what you've got.

Short of a transplant, is there anything you can do to stop thinning hair?

Yes. With some treatments, you can slow down or stop hair thinning -- and maybe even grow back some hair you thought was gone forever.

Minoxidil

This is the only over-the-counter medication for hair loss approved by the FDA. It won't rescue a receding hairline. It does stimulate hair growth, although scientists aren't quite sure how it works.
Minoxidil is available as Rogaine or Theroxidil, or in generic form. It's sold as a liquid or foam and in two strengths: 2% and 5%.

Finasteride

This medication stops your body from making the hormone at the root of male pattern baldness, DHT (dihydrotestosterone). It is available under the brand name Propecia.

Biotin and Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Biotin is a B vitamin that is essential for your health. You most likely get plenty of it in your diet in egg yolks, yeast, liver, and other foods. That’s good news because too little biotin can cause hair loss
You may have heard that laser combs, brushes, hoods, and caps can help halt hair loss. The theory is that when hair follicles absorb laser light at a certain level, it stimulates hair to grow. But there’s not enough evidence that any of these devices restore hair or prevent balding.
When to See a Doctor for Hair Loss
If you lose hair suddenly, see your doctor. It may be caused by illnesses, medicine, or your diet.

ACNE & PREGNANCY

FOR ACNE PRONE SKIN: BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER PREGNANCY

Pre-pregnancy

1. Try to get acne under control before trying to get pregnant. If a woman has acne before pregnancy and is taking an oral medication, her acne could get worse once she stops her current acne medication while pregnant.

2. Women should try to maintain a healthy body weight pre-pregnancy. If a woman is overweight before getting pregnant, studies show there is an increased chance that a male child will reach puberty at an earlier age — thus having acne at an earlier age.

During pregnancy

1.Wash the skin with lukewarm water and mild cleansers or foams. Avoid cleansers that contain beads that scrub the skin; they are too inflammatory for skin that is already inflamed by acne.

2. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (protects the skin from both UVA and UVB rays) with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher every day to protect the skin from pigmentary changes that can occur during pregnancy. We advise use of physical sun blockers, which contain zinc or titanium.

Post-pregnancy

1. If a woman chooses to breastfeed her baby, she must view medications categorized by the FDA the same way she would during pregnancy.

2. Generally, if a medication is safe to use during pregnancy, it is safe to use during lactation.

3. Pediatricians are the best resource for questions during lactation.
