A Christmas Story of Recovery 🎄

Just days before Christmas, Paul’s life changed in an instant. A sudden stroke left him unable to swallow, relying on a feeding tube and facing the possibility of spending Christmas in hospital—away from home for the first time in 27 years.

After being introduced to Phagenyx, everything began to change. With just 10 minutes of daily treatment for six days, Paul started swallowing liquids again. Sensation returned. Confidence followed.

Soon after, he was celebrating Christmas exactly where he belonged, at home with the people he loves ❤️

One year on, Paul continues to make progress. His swallowing and speech are stronger, and his quality of life has improved.

This is why we do what we do. Because restoring swallowing isn’t just about recovery, it’s about being present for the moments that matter most.

This holiday season, we celebrate Paul and every patient helped by Phagenyx. ✨

Firsts are always special.💙

This fall, our US team hosted an amazing group of SLPs in Chicago for our first-ever Advanced User Course for experienced clinicians. Over two days, participants explored complex dysphagia cases, patient selection, workflow optimization, and hands-on neuromodulation training with Phagenyx.

And the feedback was incredible:
💬 “I learned so much — can’t wait to share this with our team.”
💬 “Phagenesis truly partners with us and helps us treat more patients confidently.”

These moments remind us: We don’t just deliver a device. We build partnerships, support continuous learning, and work alongside clinicians to drive the best possible outcomes for patients.💙

Huge thank-you to the SLPs who joined us and to our Clinical Specialists for setting the bar high for future programs.

Swallowing may seem simple, but it’s actually a complex process. It takes precise coordination of muscles and nerves to move food safely from the mouth to the stomach while protecting the airway. When this process doesn’t work properly, it’s called dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing.

Dysphagia can lead to choking, aspiration, malnutrition, and dehydration. It’s more common than many people realise, especially after a stroke.

💡Check out the infographic to learn why dysphagia is so common and yet unseen and why awareness matters.

We’re committed to helping people regain control of swallowing and improve their quality of life. Learn how can support safer, easier eating post-stroke. www.phagenesis.com

We’re excited to share that , Manager of APP Services at UMC, NJ, was awarded Best Poster Presentation at ! 🎉

His poster highlighted powerful real-world evidence from JSUMC showing how the Phagenyx® system is helping patients with severe dysphagia post-stroke :

• 60%+ regained the ability to eat by mouth by discharge
• About 58% avoided a PEG at discharge
• 4-day reduction in mean length of stay vs. control

JSUMC is also the first acute-care hospital in the Northeast to offer this innovative therapy, and the team has treated more than 30 patients with . 💙

Huge appreciation to , Shimkus, and the incredible APP, SLP, and nursing teams for their dedication to improving patient recovery.✨

Recently, we held our second Centre of Excellence in Bad Kissingen, aiming to deepen clinical understanding, facilitate meaningful exchange, and ultimately support PES (Pharyngeal Electrical Stimulation) utilization in dysphagia management. 🧠

Participants had the opportunity to engage in an interactive case discussion focused on applying PES in various clinical scenarios and also got to witness two live PES treatments on the ward, reinforcing the learning with real-world examples.

The event was highly successful. From the start, participants engaged openly, contributed actively, and helped shape the workshop with their thoughtful questions and clinical insights. The small group format once again proved invaluable, creating the ideal setting for deep learning, genuine exchange, and effective networking.🤩🙌🏻

A special thank you to Muck and Dr. Szilivia Demjan, who co-hosted the CoE with us and supported the delivery of such a rich and impactful program.👏

Last month, we hosted our second Austrian User Group Meeting in Linz, and it was an absolute blast! Over 60 professionals from 40 active sites joined us for engaging discussions around interdisciplinary dysphagia management, with a special focus on ICU and PES care. Participants learned how to implement these practices, supported by real-world case studies and recent publications.🤩

The event also marked the introduction of the newly founded Interdisciplinary Dysphagia Society Austria (IDA), a non-profit platform dedicated to connecting professionals across the care continuum for swallowing disorders. Advancing dysphagia management takes passion and collaboration, and we’re inspired to see IDA creating space for meaningful dialogue that drives change.

A special thank you to our clinical specialist Degen-MacDonald for organising another successful User Group Meeting! 👏🏻

💁 Welcome to the brand new Phagenesis.com!

Neurogenic dysphagia after a stroke is far too common, harmful, and costly. 9 in 20 stroke survivors experience dysphagia. It triples pneumonia risk, multiplies mortality risk at three months by 8x, and increases cost of care by ~$28,000 per patient.
What slows progress is not only the condition itself but the lack of shared understanding around its complexity and impact. With the launch of our new website, we’re working to help change that.

Our site offers a clear throughline that takes us from the current problem to better clinical practice. Healthcare providers can review the science behind Phagenyx, understand who may be a good candidate, learn how treatment is delivered and integrated into existing workflows, and consider next steps with training and support to launch a pharyngeal electrical stimulation (PES) program in your facility.

This launch marks a big step forward in our mission to transform the treatment of neurogenic dysphagia – and a new foundation to support impacted patients and the providers who serve them.

Neurogenic dysphagia treatment is ready for transformation. So are we. A new chapter in our work is about to begin.

Our Stroke Research Team at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital is the UK's leading recruiter for a national clinical study to support patients recovering from stroke 👏

In a ground-breaking new trial, led by experts from the University of Nottingham, the team is assessing whether Pharyngeal Electrical Stimulation (PES) can help people to recover the ability to swallow again following a stroke.

Deborah Broadbent is a Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist at UHD, and the Principal Investigator for the trial.

“We have recruited 50 people to the study and have met our target. This also makes us the highest recruiting site for this study which has so far recruited 419 patients across 33 sites. We plan to continue to recruit as the study has another year to go.”

"Our involvement is very much a team effort. The Speech and Language Therapy Team is extremely motivated and are involved in identifying, consenting, and providing treatment to patients we recruit. We have fantastic support from our ward nurses and doctors as well as the research team.”

“It is great for the speech and language therapists to be involved in stroke research and really helps our learning as well as our profile. It is also a positive opportunity for me as a therapist to be the Principal Investigator for this study, and I am grateful for this experience and the chance to be involved in current research which may impact future management of people who have dysphagia following stroke.”

Well done team! 🥳
