At Phagenesis, our mission is to eliminate the burden of neurogenic dysphagia.

On 18 March, we came together as a team to reflect, learn, and raise awareness for UK Swallowing Awareness Day.

From a fun lunchtime quiz to a patient story corner that brought home the real impact of our work, it was a day full of meaning.

It gave us a chance to reflect on the patients whose lives have improved as they regained the ability to eat again, enjoy food, and reconnect with everyday moments many of us take for granted.

Because being able to eat again is more than the return of a function
It is dignity, recovery, and quality of life.

And that is why we do what we do. 💙

At 39, a stroke took Kayleigh's voice. Her swallow. Her ability to eat or drink.
For someone who loves food, loves talking, and writes for a living, it was devastating.

After six days of treatment, she ate buttered toast and cried.

Then her mum and sister arrived and asked: What are you craving most?

Chips. Salt, vinegar and ketchup. From the hospital cafeteria. 🍟

At that moment, still in the hospital, still recovering, Kayleigh felt something she carries with her every single day since, Waves of gratitude

Today is UK Swallowing Awareness Day, and we're so proud to share Kayleigh's story because this is exactly what recovery can look like when the right treatment is there.

PES is now recognized as an important tool for post-stroke recovery.

The new AHA/ASA clinical practice guideline recommends that PES can be beneficial to reduce dysphagia severity and decrease the risk of aspiration.

Baptist Health is leading the way in post-stroke care. 🧠

It is the first health system in Florida to integrate the System for patients with severe post-stroke dysphagia. Across Boca Raton Regional Hospital and Baptist Hospital Miami respectively and patients are experiencing:

A Christmas Story of Recovery 🎄

Just days before Christmas, Paul’s life changed in an instant. A sudden stroke left him unable to swallow, relying on a feeding tube and facing the possibility of spending Christmas in hospital—away from home for the first time in 27 years.

Swallowing may seem simple, but it’s actually a complex process. It takes precise coordination of muscles and nerves to move food safely from the mouth to the stomach while protecting the airway. When this process doesn’t work properly, it’s called dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing.
