My name is Kate and I am a qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist. I qualified over 2 years ago and to date I have helped 100s of people to break habits that are impacting their lives.

I own and run Healing Hooves and Wanneroo Riding and therapeutic centre where I have been have been a Equine Assisted Learning Practitioner for the last 5 years , helping people to become more aware and develop better social and emotional skills.
I am also a qualified Reiki practitioner and am qualified in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Life Coaching, CBT, MBCT and Counselling.

Many people come to me wanting to make changes in their lives, yet they don't really know why they want to make them or haven't really bought into this reason fully. They also have no clear goals for what they want to achieve. These are 2 factors that will make changing habits really hard.

Many people don’t really understand what hypnosis is and how it can benefit them. Others have seen stage shows and think I will have them clucking like a chicken.

So lets explore a little more about hypnosis

Hypnosis, also known as hypnotherapy, is a method of inducing a trance or a dream-like state of deep relaxation in order to treat disorders of a mainly psychological or emotional origin. It has been practised in various forms for thousands of years by many cultures including Druid, Celtic and Egyptian. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, hypnosis (or ‘mesmerism’) was seen more as a sideshow curiosity than a valid medical treatment.

Today, hypnosis is recognised by the scientific community as an effective healing tool, although how it works is still something of a mystery.

The hypnotic state

The brain has different levels of consciousness, or awareness, ranging from fully alert to drowsy to fully asleep, with variations in between. Hypnotic states occur naturally and spontaneously.

Everyday examples include:
• Daydreaming
• Being absorbed in a pleasant task and losing track of time
• Getting lulled into a dreamy state by boredom, for example, when listening to a dull speech.

Clinical hypnosis deliberately induces this kind of relaxed state of awareness. Once the mind is in a relaxed state, any therapeutic suggestions can have great effect on attitudes, perceptions and behaviours.

The way that this occurs isn’t fully understood. Some researchers believe that hypnosis promotes particular brain wave activity that allows the mind to take in and adopt new ideas, while others suggest that hypnosis accesses the ‘unconscious mind’, which is more open to new ideas than the rational ‘conscious mind’.

Hypnosis - you are in control

Suggestions may be taken to heart, but only if those suggestions are acceptable to the hypnotised person. Contrary to popular belief, you can’t be hypnotised into doing things against your will. You can’t be forced into a hypnotic state either. Instead, you allow yourself to be hypnotised. It is a voluntary altering of your own consciousness, and you are always in control. In other words, you are hypnotising yourself.

Results of hypnosis

While it appears that almost anyone can be hypnotised, hypnosis does not always bring about the results you want. It is unclear why hypnosis does not work for everyone. Some researchers believe that a person is born with character traits that allow hypnosis to work, while other researchers believe that the ability to be hypnotised is a learned skill.

Suggestibility doesn’t mean you have a weak character, as popularly believed. A strong-minded person may be a good candidate for hypnosis because they will strive to get results from treatment.

People who get the best results from hypnosis appear to have a few things in common, including:

• A good imagination
• The ability to get lost in a movie or book
• The ability to concentrate and keep mental focus.

How does hypnotherapy work?

Hypnotherapy works by communication directly with the subconscious mind by inducing a trance (sleep like state), so your conscious mind rests and allows direct access to your subconscious mind. It is this part of your mind that controls many deep routed behaviours that can negatively impact our daily lives.

Understanding your mind

There are 3 aspects of the mind – The conscious mind, the subconscious mind and the unconscious mind.

The conscious mind is the part we’re aware of and think with. It is easily changed when we apply logical arguments (i.e. you can change your mind when presented with a compelling argument), and it’s the part of our mind we are most familiar with.

The unconscious mind is the creator of dreams. Its job is to sort and organize the millions of pieces of data you’ve been exposed to. I always think of the unconscious mind as a file clerk in a gigantic room full of file cabinets. Some rare bits of information get dismissed as trash, but most of it gets filed away in case it’s useful later.

The subconscious mind remembers and stores everything we have ever experienced. It also uses these to create mental programs for how we react in situations moving forward. Habits and our how to lists are all stored within our conscious mind.

The human subconscious mind can process up to 4 trillion electrical signals per second. It takes in everything around us and stores it for future use. However it can be chid like. It believes things with uncritical acceptance ….. this is where issues arise, if you are bullied for years as a child, told you are useless and worthless, your subconscious will store and remember it as if it were fact.

It is also a meaning making machine, trying to make meaning and connections. This is where other problems can arise. OCD for example, the need to do something again and again can be triggered by you not doing something you normally would and then crash the car, your brain connects these 2 unrelated events and creates meaning. If I don’t do x something bad will happen!

If you want to change the mental programs you’re running, the subconscious mind is where you‘ll need to focus and make changes.

This is where hypnotherapy can assist. By taking you into a deep state of relaxation, the hypnotist can speak directly with your subconscious mind and change old patterns of thought and help create more positive ones, quickly and easily.

Welcome to New Beginnings Hypnotherapy. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Kate and I have been working as a helping practitioner and delivering equine therapy for a number of years. I qualified in hypnotherapy a few years ago, and to date have helped hundreds of people to make changes in their lives.

As well as an advanced diploma in hypnotherapy, I also hold qualifications in life coaching, neuro-linguistic programming, positive psychology, cognitive behaviour therapy, Mindfulness cognitive behaviour therapy and counselling.
