SAGE - Students Advocating Gender Equality

SAGE - Students Advocating Gender Equality SAGE aims to promote gender equality through an intersectional perspective on activism and policy changes.

As a club of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna our main objective is to facilitate discussions of issues regarding gender equality in our community and to create a just environment for all the DA’s students and staff. We will continue our work to come up with appropriate policies to deal with harassment, any type of discrimination and abuse of power, to provide more education in the field of gender equality, improve mental health services and finally to better support students throughout their academic year through the Ombudsleute. SAGE is responsible for the organization of a range of different activities that aim to empower students to become more knowledgeable of gender equality issues and aware of their own biases as well as to target systematic problems and contribute to more just environments. SAGE will focus particularly on maintaining an intersectional and non-Eurocentric perspective of the plethora of gender issues through a variety of events such as but not limited to movie discussion nights, a book club, exhibition viewings, excursions to pertinent organizations, workshops on consent, inclusivity and mental health, campaigns for important dates, participation in marches and protests, fundraisers for NGOs and informal social events. SAGE is a space for everyone: students and staff of any age, size, skin colour, gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, ability, and everything in between.

As the new academic year is about to start, we wanted to look back at what SAGE has been up to over the past year ✨

Highlights included the Vienna Discussion Forum at the UN, a Female Diplomacy Café with , and two impactful panel discussions: one for International Women’s Day with Club.DA and RCVMT, and another with the on “The Architecture of Inequality.”

We also organised two consent workshops, hosted some unforgettable themed Tipsy parties, and joined both the International Women’s Day March and the Vienna Rainbow Parade. After years of effort from past boards, we’re especially proud that the Consent Workshop is now part of the Gender Equality Plan 2024–28 as a mandatory introduction week event 🌈

Through activism, dialogue, and collaboration, SAGE continues to advocate for gender equality – not just as an ideal, but as a reality worth striving for 🌟 As we hand things over to the new board – Klara, Miriam, Kate, Immo, and Sonja – thank you for being part of SAGE this past academic year. We can’t wait to see what’s next!

Your SAGE 2024/25 board,
💜Marlene, Teanna, Andreea, Majbritt & Giulia💜

On May 6th, 2025, over 60 students, professors, and members of the international community came together for an important panel discussion on The Architecture of Inequality: Violence Against Women and Global Systems.

Organized by Students Advocating for Gender Equality (SAGE) and the Diplomatic Ball Committee, the panel explored how systemic inequalities contribute to violence against women and girls. Here in the European Union, 1 in 3 women have experienced physical violence, sexual violence, or threats in adulthood. This stark reality reinforces the urgency of dismantling the systems that sustain violence.

The panelists shared valuable, tangible actions we can all take to drive change at both the local and international levels. One key message was the importance of challenging everyday sexism, as it plays a significant role in maintaining the inequalities that enable violence. By not tolerating such behaviour in our daily lives, we can all help dismantle the structures that allow violence to persist.

We were also proud to share at the panel that the Diplomatic Ball Committee raised €15,000 to support Autonome Österreichische Frauenhäuser AÖF (Austria’s leading network of women’s shelters) and its vital work with survivors of gender-based violence 👏👏👏

We were joined by a distinguished panel, including:
- Ms. Martina Knoll, Head of Information Centre against Violence, AÖF
- Ms. Helene Gressenbauer-Rösner, President of UN Women Austria
- Ms. Diren Helin Herlbauer, Gender Specialist, UNODC
- Ms. Katharina Fürnkranz, Gender Associate, UNIDO
- Moderated by Dr. Vanessa Gauthier Vela, Diplomatic Academy of Vienna

Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this vital conversation. Together, we can create lasting change and work toward a world where violence against women is no longer tolerated.

📣 Join us for a timely panel discussion on The Architecture of Inequality: Violence Against Women and Global Systems 📣

Violence against women is upheld by an architecture of inequality – woven into legal systems, institutions and societal norms across the globe.

Following the Diplomatic Ball 2025, with all proceeds going to Autonome Österreichische Frauenhäuser (AÖF), this panel brings together experts from AÖF and international UN gender experts to examine how systemic inequalities perpetuate harm against women and girls.

💜 Event Recap: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back: Gender Equality in Times of Backlash 💜

On March 5, SAGE, Club.DA, and Rotary Club Vienna Maria Theresia came together to mark International Women’s Day with an evening of powerful discussions on gender backlash and the ongoing fight for equality.

From opening remarks by Deputy Director Martina Schubert, Club DA Vice President Brigitta Blaha, RCVMT President Tuba Ersoy, and SAGE’s Teanna Lackner to a thought-provoking panel featuring Ambassador Annika Markovic, MEP Evelyn Regner, Karen Fanto, and Rudolf Krickl, the event underscored both the setbacks we face and the collective strength needed to push forward.

Teanna’s words captured the urgency of this moment:
📢 “The backsliding on women’s rights is a stark reminder that progress is never linear—and that our advocacy is more urgent than ever.”

As we reflect on the challenges ahead, let’s continue to stand together, speak out, and build a future where equality is not up for debate. 💪🏼

With International Women’s Day this week, we want to take a moment to spotlight an inspiring event SAGE organised in collaboration with the DA’s Italian Society. 📣

On 21 February, some of our members had the incredible opportunity to meet with H.E. Ambassador Elena Molaroni of San Marino and a group of distinguished female Ambassadors in Vienna (representing Albania, Bulgaria, Estonia, France, Germany, Ireland, Norway, and the United States at the OSCE) to discuss the role of women in diplomacy.

From sharing personal career journeys to addressing challenges and initiatives that promote and women’s empowerment, our conversations were a powerful reminder of why representation matters in international affairs.

We are deeply grateful to Ambassador Molaroni for hosting us, to all the Ambassadors who took time from their busy schedules to engage in this meaningful discussion, and to our colleagues from for the great collaboration.

As we celebrate , we reaffirm our commitment to advocating for equal rights and opportunities—because a more inclusive future is one where we all work side by side 💪✨

🌍 This year’s Vienna Discussion Forum 2024: Why Waste It? was an incredible opportunity for SAGE to engage with global leaders on the intersection of gender equality and environmental sustainability.

We not only asked questions to the panelists but also contributed policy recommendations, which will be featured in a document set to be published in the coming months. It’s an honour to have our voices included in these critical conversations about sustainable solutions and women’s empowerment 🌱💪
