Prof Ian Macdonald from University of Nottingham is the Northern Community Health and Research Foundation Visiting Professor for 2023. Since 1991 he has held many positions including Professor of Metabolic Physiology, Head of the School of Biomedical Sciences, Director of Research for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Head of the School of Life Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Nottingham University.
Ian Macdonald’s research interests are concerned with the functional consequences of metabolic and nutritional disturbances in health and disease, with specific interests in obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and exercise. A major feature has been the study of multiple body systems to evaluate whole body responses.
Two major areas of current interest relate to the use of MR imaging and spectroscopy for assessing alterations in metabolism and the influence of nutrients and metabolic disturbances on gene expression in adipose tissue and muscle. Current work in these areas relates to physical activity and inactivity (including immobilisation), obesity and diabetes.
He has published over 400 peer-reviewed original research papers, together with reviews, book chapters and invited contributions. He has been President of the UK Nutrition Society, Treasurer of Federation of European Neuroscience Societies and of the World Obesity Federation.
