Adult acne isn’t random… and it’s rarely just a skincare issue.

When breakouts show up along the jawline, chin or right before your period, hormones are often part of the picture.

In clinic, we most commonly see three drivers behind adult acne.

✨ Androgen excess or sensitivity
Higher testosterone can increase oil production, leading to blocked pores and deep, painful breakouts. Stress plays a big role here, elevated cortisol can push androgens even higher.

✨ Oestrogen dominance or poor oestrogen clearance
This isn’t always about “high oestrogen”, but how well your body clears it. Poor clearance can increase inflammation and oil production, contributing to cyclical breakouts, PMS, bloating and heavy or painful periods.

✨ Low progesterone
Progesterone is naturally calming and anti-inflammatory. When it’s low, oestrogen and androgens can dominate, often showing up as premenstrual acne, anxiety, poor sleep or PMDD-type symptoms.
