It's the race that stops a nation and Melbourne Cup celebrations were held at each of our homes today.

Residents watched the big race and enjoyed an afternoon of wonderful food, great company and of course prizes!

Today we celebrated ‘OXI Day’ (pronounced oh-hee), meaning “No.”

Eighty-five years ago, Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas refused Benito Mussolini’s demand to allow Italian troops to cross into Greece. News of his defiance spread quickly, and citizens filled the streets shouting “Oxi!” – “No!”

Our residents marked the occasion with a vibrant day of cultural celebration, featuring the Greek and Australian National Anthems, poetry recitations, singing, and traditional Greek dancing accompanied by talented bouzouki players. The festivities continued with a delicious lunch and the traditional Greek dessert, galaktoboureko.

A heartfelt thank you to the Cyprus Community of SA Choir for their wonderful cultural performance of songs To Yiasemi – The Jasmine, Ta Deilina – The Sunsets, and Chrysopoullos Fillo - Golden-green leaf at St Peters today! 🥳

With rich Greek folklore our Plateia clients had a small taste of the customs that transpire a traditional Greek pre-wedding celebration.

The heart-warming cultural voices of the Port Adelaide Greek Orthodox Community & Parish of The Nativity of Christ (PAGOC) choir together with the Plateia clients echoed wishes to our very own Iliana:

Καλά στέφανα! Good ceremonial wedding wreaths!
(the stefana are the ornate wedding crowns worn by the bride and groom, which symbolize their divine coronation as King and Queen of their home).

Η ώρα η καλή! The time is good!
(a traditional Greek phrase said to newlyweds to wish them a happy and lucky wedding day).

Καλούς απογόνους! Good offspring!
(a traditional fertility blessing expressing the hope that the newly married couple will have healthy and numerous children).

Βίον ανθόσπαρτον! Life full of flowers!
(an ancient Greek symbolic phrase wishing the couple have a thriving, flourishing, and beautiful life together).

Over the weekend, we celebrated Father's Day across our homes!

It was a special time to honour and thank the incredible fathers and father figures who play such meaningful roles in our lives. We marked the occasion with BBQs, morning teas, thoughtful gifts, and heartwarming visits from loved ones.

Our Croydon Park and St Peters residents and staff were delighted to welcome renowned Greek international artist Nikos Kourkoulis, joined by support act Haris Halamoutis, for a vibrant morning of music and fun.

Nikos brought joy to our community with traditional Greek folk songs and joined in with calling the bingo — creating special moments for everyone involved.

It was an absolute pleasure to host Nikos, and we wish him all the best on the rest of his tour! 🎶

Spring has officially sprung! 🌺

Earlier this week, our Croydon Park residents enjoyed a lovely outing to Virginia Home & Garden - Virginia Nursery. They spent the morning sipping coffee, sharing cake, and strolling through beautiful gardens. There were plenty of smiles — and a few flowers taken home too! We’re looking forward to the next visit.

It’s September and the Royal Adelaide Show is in full swing. This week our St Peters residents enjoyed their own show experience, complete with fun games, morning tea with baked treats, and of course raffle prizes.

What’s not to enjoy about a wonderful show experience without the crowds and unpredictable weather!

Last week, our Plateia Social Respite Program was blessed to welcome Fr. John Saredakis, who led the Blessing of the Waters for the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos. Father's words lifted the hearts of clients and staff.

The day was made even more special as everyone came together to celebrate the 95th birthday of our cherished client, Andoni. A festive and hearty lunch was shared by all, and the day was filled with warmth, joy and community spirit.

Last Friday our St Peters residents were treated to a Book Week Parade by the children of East Adelaide School.

The children were excited to show off their extravagant outfits as our residents waved and cheered. It was a wonderful morning full of fun, colour and costumes. We are already excited for next year!

Their consistent commitment to treating and supporting our residents with courtesy and kindness is at the heart of everything we do. Today, and always, we thank them for the incredible work they do to make a difference.

Today, we celebrated Linda's 91st birthday, surrounded by the heartfelt love and appreciation of the very clients she serves with dedication each week. Her warmth, commitment, and joy continue to inspire everyone around her.
