Most committee burnout in clubs doesn’t happen because the workload is too big.

It happens because the work becomes emotionally heavy.

Unhappy members.
Complaints landing in inboxes.
Decisions that someone will always disagree with.

Add that on top of work, family and volunteering your time and it can start to wear people down.

Most committee members care deeply about their club.
They want to do the right thing.

What helps is having support, good conversations within the committee, and a clear way of handling difficult situations when they arise.

Strong clubs look after the people running them.

Clubs do incredible things in their communities.

Behind the scenes though, committees often end up dealing with some pretty tough moments.

Complaints.
Misunderstandings.
People feeling frustrated or unheard.

The Club Conflict Compass workshops on 28 and 29 April are designed to help club leaders handle those situations with more confidence.

If you’re involved in running a club — committee member, president, coach or volunteer — the session is built around the kinds of situations you’re already dealing with.

Recently I delivered the Club Conflict Compass workshop at Unley Oval’s community centre on behalf of four local councils working hard to support their community clubs across Adelaide.

Different organisations and clubs, different roles — but very similar challenges.

When people care about their communities, there are always strong views involved.

What I always appreciate in sessions like this is the willingness in the room to talk honestly about those moments that can be hard to manage.

Good conversations make better decisions.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion.

When conflict lands in a club, people often react quickly.

Sometimes too quickly.

One of the things covered in the Club Conflict Compass is a simple structure for slowing things down.

North – know your role
East – engage early
South – seek to understand
West – work toward a way forward

Nothing complicated.

Just a practical way to approach difficult situations without making them worse.

When conflict happens in your club, is there a process people follow — or does it get figured out as you go?

One simple thing that helps when a complaint lands in a club inbox.

Pause.

Before firing off a response, pick up the phone and speak to the person who sent it.

Emails often arrive when someone is frustrated, disappointed or feeling unheard. A quick conversation can clarify what actually happened, what matters to them and what outcome they’re hoping for.

More often than not, it slows things down and leads to a much better outcome.

It sounds simple, but in the moment many clubs jump straight into email replies, long threads, or formal complaint processes before first having a conversation to understand what’s actually happened and what outcome the person is seeking.

A phone call early can prevent a lot of unnecessary escalation.

This is one of the situations we spend time unpacking in the Club Conflict Compass workshops coming up in April.

When complaints come into your club, what usually happens first — an email response or a conversation?

One of the biggest issues I see in clubs is the meeting after the meeting.

You know the one.

The formal meeting finishes.
People pack up.
Then in the car park, the bar, or the group chat the real conversations start.

“That decision wasn’t right.”
“We should have done it differently.”
“I didn’t feel comfortable saying anything in there.”

It might seem harmless in the moment, but over time it quietly erodes trust.

Decisions get undermined.
People feel blindsided.
Committees stop functioning as a team.

Healthy clubs don’t avoid disagreement.
But the conversation needs to happen in the room, not afterwards.

Not always easy, but it makes governance a lot stronger.

Have you seen the “meeting after the meeting” happen in clubs?

Community sport runs on volunteers.

People coaching after work.
People answering emails late at night.
People stepping into committee roles because someone has to.

Most are just trying to do the right thing for their club.

When conflict happens, it’s rarely because people don’t care.

More often it’s because people care deeply and see things differently.

Helping clubs work through those moments well is where most of my work sits.

If you volunteer in a club, what’s the part of the role people outside the club probably don’t see?

Recently delivered the Navigating Conflict module as part of the Clubs SA development program.
Licensed clubs operate in a pretty complex environment.

On any given day leaders might be dealing with patron behaviour, member expectations, staff issues, alcohol-fuelled incidents or gaming room disputes.

Not easy situations.

So much experience brought to the session and people shared honesty about the challenges they face.

When leaders have a clear structure for handling conflict it helps them slow things down and respond fairly, while still keeping venues safe and well run.

Appreciate the discussion and insights shared in the session.

Most conflict in clubs doesn’t start with a big moment.

It usually starts quietly.

A decision that isn’t explained.
A message that goes unanswered.
Someone feeling like they weren’t heard.

By the time it reaches the committee table people are already frustrated.

The clubs that manage these situations best don’t wait for things to blow up.
They deal with the small stuff earlier.

It’s not always comfortable, but it makes a huge difference.

Have you seen a small issue turn into a much bigger club problem later?

Mediation isn’t about fixing people.

It’s about slowing conversations down, creating structure, and giving everyone space to be properly heard.

When this happens early, escalation reduces and relationships are more likely to hold.
Handled well, these conversations can change everything.

Not every issue benefits from a one-off response.

Ongoing support options help organisations deal with things earlier, with more context and less pressure.

It’s often the difference between reacting and leading steadily.
Consistency changes outcomes.
