Community sport runs on volunteers.

People coaching after work.
People answering emails late at night.
People stepping into committee roles because someone has to.

Most are just trying to do the right thing for their club.

When conflict happens, it’s rarely because people don’t care.

More often it’s because people care deeply and see things differently.

Helping clubs work through those moments well is where most of my work sits.

If you volunteer in a club, what’s the part of the role people outside the club probably don’t see?

Recently delivered the Navigating Conflict module as part of the Clubs SA development program.
Licensed clubs operate in a pretty complex environment.

On any given day leaders might be dealing with patron behaviour, member expectations, staff issues, alcohol-fuelled incidents or gaming room disputes.

Not easy situations.

So much experience brought to the session and people shared honesty about the challenges they face.

When leaders have a clear structure for handling conflict it helps them slow things down and respond fairly, while still keeping venues safe and well run.

Appreciate the discussion and insights shared in the session.

For those working in licensed clubs — what situations are the hardest to manage?

Most conflict in clubs doesn’t start with a big moment.

It usually starts quietly.

A decision that isn’t explained.
A message that goes unanswered.
Someone feeling like they weren’t heard.

By the time it reaches the committee table people are already frustrated.

The clubs that manage these situations best don’t wait for things to blow up.
They deal with the small stuff earlier.

It’s not always comfortable, but it makes a huge difference.

Have you seen a small issue turn into a much bigger club problem later?

Mediation isn’t about fixing people.

It’s about slowing conversations down, creating structure, and giving everyone space to be properly heard.

When this happens early, escalation reduces and relationships are more likely to hold.
Handled well, these conversations can change everything.

Not every issue benefits from a one-off response.

Ongoing support options help organisations deal with things earlier, with more context and less pressure.

It’s often the difference between reacting and leading steadily.
Consistency changes outcomes.

Committees carry a lot.

Compliance. Expectations. Personalities. Limited time.

Most aren’t dysfunctional, they’re just stretched.

Practical governance support helps leaders make decisions earlier, with confidence, rather than when things feel urgent. Support doesn’t remove responsibility, it makes leadership more manageable.

Some conversations work best when they happen in the room.

In-person delivery of the Club Conflict Compass creates space for practical discussion, real scenarios, and shared learning — grounded in the realities of club life.

Planning for future sessions is underway.

Expressions of interest are now open for clubs wanting practical tools to navigate conflict well.

More details coming soon.

Most of the work I do starts with a quiet conversation.

Something feels uncomfortable.
A situation is getting harder to manage.
A committee isn’t quite sure what the right next step is.

That’s usually the right time to reach out.
A short conversation can often bring clarity before things escalate.

Good complaint handling isn’t about shutting things down or “winning”.

It’s about fairness, clarity, and helping people feel heard — even when outcomes are hard.

Many issues escalate simply because no one is confident about the process.

A calm, consistent approach makes a bigger difference than most people expect.

Sometimes structure is the solution.

I recently read this piece on why community sport volunteers need smarter tools to handle discrimination and complex behaviour — and it resonated deeply.

Having spent a lot of time in community sport, on and off the field, this is exactly what I see play out week after week.

Conflict usually isn’t the problem.
Avoiding it — or not knowing how to step into it well — is.

This is why I developed the Club Conflict Compass: to give committees and volunteers practical structure, shared language and confidence to handle difficult conversations earlier, fairly and with care.

📖 Worth a read for anyone involved in community sport.

The start of the year has a way of bringing things back to the surface.

The complaint that never quite wrapped up.
The committee tension that lingered.
The governance question that kept getting postponed.

Most organisations aren’t dealing with chaos — they’re dealing with complexity, limited time, and people doing their best.

That’s often where the real work begins.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
