Did you know that joint hypermobility isn’t just about being flexible?

Hypermobility is a connective tissue condition that allows joints to move beyond the normal range. While some flexibility can be helpful for activities like dance or gymnastics, excessive movement can cause joint instability, leading to pain, fatigue, and frequent aches or injuries.

Over time, this instability can make even everyday activities — like walking, lifting, or sitting at a desk — more difficult.

💪 That’s where Exercise Physiologists come in.
We design individualised exercise programs that strengthen the muscles supporting hypermobile joints. This helps improve joint control, reduce pain, and support better posture and movement patterns.

With the right exercise approach, people with hypermobility can feel stronger, more confident, and better able to do the things they love — safely and comfortably.

🌟 Physical Literacy Week 🌟

This week is Physical Literacy Week! and at Achieving Abilities we’re celebrating with daily movement challenges — and we want YOU to join in too!

👉 Follow along in our stories each day to discover a new activity that you can do at home!

But what is physical literacy?
Physical literacy is all about developing the skills, confidence, and motivation to move your body in different ways throughout life — whether that’s running, climbing, dancing, balancing, or playing. It’s not just about fitness or sport; it’s about helping children (and adults!) feel capable and excited to be active every day.

When we build physical literacy, we’re helping kids develop stronger bodies, better coordination, and the confidence to take on new challenges — setting them up for lifelong health, participation, and fun!

Let’s get moving together and celebrate all the amazing ways our bodies can move!

Here’s a behind-the-scenes moment from between takes that we love too much not to share! 🎬 🐺

While filming some content, our team and clients took a quick break to play “What’s the Time, Mr Wolf?” — a fun reminder of the joy movement can bring.

Even spontaneous games like this support important developmental skills such as coordination, reaction time, listening, and turn-taking, while also encouraging social connection and confidence.

We love seeing these moments of laughter and learning come together — both on and off camera! ❤️💚💙

Did you know gross motor skills (think crawling, walking, running, jumping) lay the foundation for your child’s confidence, independence, and play?

Gross motor skills involve large muscle groups - arms, legs and trunk - moving together in a coordinated and controlled way 🤸

Gross motor skills aren’t just about movement – they help kids explore their world, make friends, and feel capable in their bodies. These skills are essential for everyday activities like walking, jumping, catching and throwing, climbing stairs and even getting dressed!

Exercise Physiologists work with kids to build strength, coordination, and balance through fun, play-based activities. Whether it’s helping a toddler master climbing stairs or supporting a school-aged child or teen, or even a young adult to improve their running technique, or to throw and catch a ball, use a racquet or bat, climb the playground, we focus on:

✨ Developing core strength & stability
✨ Improving coordination & balance
✨ Supporting participation in sport & play
✨ Making movement fun and engaging

Fine motor skills - why strength matters 🖐️ 💪🏼

Fine motor skills aren’t just about hands and fingers! 🖐️
We need strong cores, shoulders, and arms (and grip strength) to support those small, detailed movements.

Our Exercise Physiologists focus on building core strength, posture, shoulder stability, balance and coordination, and grip strength — the building blocks for confident, coordinated hands.

Exercise Physiology can also be a great option while on a waitlist, or a great way to compliment existing therapy, to build the underlying physical foundation to maximise therapy outcomes!

Did you know that physical development supports all areas of a child’s growth? 💪🏼😊

Physical development is one of the foundational aspects of a child’s development.
It includes both gross motor skills (like running, jumping, and climbing) and fine motor skills (like holding a pencil, or using scissors). As children gain better control over their bodies, it directly supports progress in several other key developmental areas such as:

Cognitive Development 🧠
Children who can move and explore are more likely to engage with their environment, ask questions, and develop curiosity—essential for learning.

Social Development 🤝
Playing games and engaging in physical activities with others helps children learn teamwork, cooperation, turn-taking, and how to manage conflict. Physical spaces like playgrounds become opportunities to build friendships and develop communication skills.

Emotional Development 💛
Mastering new physical skills boosts a child’s confidence and independence. Success in physical tasks can lead to a sense of pride and self-worth, and active play can also help regulate emotions and reduce stress.

Communication & Language Development 🗣️
As children play with others, they naturally engage in conversation—whether it’s giving instructions, negotiating rules, or general chit chat. This builds vocabulary and strengthens language skills.
