Brussel sprouts are one of those underrated little powerhouses, especially for women in midlife.
Unfortunately, many people were traumatised by grandma's over boiled Brussels and now believe they don't like them - so instead of boiling them to death, I suggest you try roasting them in some ghee and I promise you'll think again.
Brussels are part of the cruciferous vegetable family, which makes them particularly supportive for hormone balance. They contain compounds like indole-3-carbinol that help the body metabolise and clear excess estrogen more efficiently. This can be especially helpful during the menopause transition, when hormone fluctuations can feel quite intense.
From a detox point of view, Brussel sprouts are rich in sulphur-containing compounds that support liver function. Your liver is responsible for processing hormones, toxins, and waste, so giving it the nutrients it needs can make a real difference to how you feel day to day.
They’re also surprisingly supportive nutritionally:
🟢 A good source of plant-based protein for a vegetable, which contributes to muscle maintenance as we age.
🟢 High in fibre, helping with gut health, blood sugar balance, and regular elimination
🟢 Rich in antioxidants like vitamin C, which support immune health and help reduce inflammation
🟢 Contain folate and B vitamins that support energy production and cellular repair
🟢 Another beautiful benefit is how they support your gut. The fibre in Brussels sprouts feeds beneficial gut bacteria, and a healthy gut plays a key role in hormone regulation, mood, and even how well you detox.
So while they might seem simple, they’re doing quite a lot behind the scenes. Think of them as a small but mighty ally for supporting your hormones, liver, and long-term vitality.
I dare you to fall in love with them 💚
