Oestrogen encourages a substance called glycogen in va**nal tissue. Glycogen is the preferred food source for Lactobacillus (those pH-protecting heroes).

When levels of oestrogen, and therefore glycogen, fall, balance can shift. This can happen at any time of a woman's life, but is especially noticeable through perimenopause or times of stress.

Supporting oestrogen through food, rest, and emotional safety creates space for stability again.

Low fat isn’t always low risk…
Cholesterol is the backbone of hormone production, so when it drops too low (or our body doesn’t have enough of the precursor nutrients) then the body can struggle to produce our important hormones like progesterone, oestrogen, cortisol and more.
Avocado 🥑, oily fish 🎣, olives 🫒 and olive oil, nuts 🌰 and seeds are all healthy, essential fats that should always be included in the diet.
And those “low fat” products? Usually contain a lot more sugar, creating other health issues that can upset hormonal health.

A few months ago I sat down to have a chat with the lovely Jenny Cotten LLC for her podcast. We talked all things perimenopause - how Womens body's feel different, what's driving that, how often women have their symptoms dismissed (and how frustrating that is) and most importantly, how to arm ourselves to stop this happening again.

Our body has a language…
Every symptom is telling us a story :
- pain reflects inflammation (which might be in the uterus or va**na but also can be in other parts of the body, driving up pain sensitivity)
- clots might indicate relative excess oestrogen or poor detoxification or even dehydration
- fatigue or mood swings might indicate nutrient deficiencies or blood sugar regulation issues.
Every body is unique, and being able to understand a specific body helps clear the co fusion, gain clarity and perspective. Care becomes collaboration between me (as the practitioner) and my patient ❤️

Preventative care - it’s a bit like taking an umbrella when it’s forecast to rain!
Getting symptoms under cover nutripath is great, and necessary. BUT we also need to work on the underlying cause, to put things in place to stop those symptoms coming back again. That’s REAL treatment. And it’s what I love best. Talking to clients who all of a sudden realise they haven’t had for months, their smelly discharge has gone completely, are regular and uneventful, they have energy and are able to enjoy all parts of life again 🥰.

The word “clean” sounds pretty harmless right? Clean eating, well that’s great for us. Clean products, yep.
Over-cleaning, inside or out, can strip our body’s natural protection. Low fat products, extreme fasting, v@ginal washes. They can all weaken the balance. The body needs nourishment, needs to be heard, it needs care and the right attention.

Oestrogen feed more than just our mood, it supports the food for our microbes too! Oestrogen is super important for maintaining our lactobacilli levels in the v@gina. These are the good guys that help keep the pH low and the pathogens (bad guys) away.
Foods like flaxseeds, tempeh, chickpeas and other phytoestrogens are supper important- especially in and . Support the cycle and rhythm of the body ❤️
