When a child shuts down, it’s not about being stubborn or disrespectful — it’s their nervous system saying, “I’m overwhelmed.”

💛 In those moments, our goal isn’t to make them talk — it’s to help them feel safe again.

Here are 3 simple things to try when that happens:
1️⃣ Lower your voice and slow your pace. Your calm tone helps regulate their system.
2️⃣ Give space and time. Silence or gentle presence can be more powerful than words.
3️⃣ Offer a bridge back to connection. This could be through a toy, drawing, a walk, or sitting side by side.

Remember: Connection comes before correction, and regulation comes before communication.

✨ Sometimes the best thing you can say is nothing — just be there.

Halloween is the perfect time to sneak language and communication into play! Here are some fun, spooky games that boost speech skills while keeping kids engaged 🎃👇

🧙‍♀️ 1️⃣ Mystery Bag: Reach in and describe what you feel — “It’s sticky and stretchy!” (Great for describing words + inferencing)

🧪 2️⃣ Potion Mixing Lab: “First pour the green slime, then add two spider legs!” (Perfect for sequencing + following directions)

🕷️ 3️⃣ Scavenger Hunt: “Find something that flies at night!” (Targets vocabulary + comprehension)

The “Wait Time” strategy is all about giving a little pause after asking a question or giving instructions. ⏳ This short pause helps the other person think, process, and respond more clearly.

💡 Tip: Start with 5–10 seconds and notice the difference in responses!
