It's December 1st so it's time to break out the Book Advent Calendar πŸŽ„ Children love discovering a surprise Christmas book each day. It takes time to build up a collection so start your countdown closer to Christmas and keep an eye out for bargain books in the sales. A little at a time adds up to a wonderful tradition.

Are you in the midst of Christmas shopping yet? Here's some ideas for toys to support language development. Flashing, electronic toys might be initially attractive, but they often have limited play potential. Simple, traditional toys often have different ways of playing with them. And don't forget how important you are in the games!

Rapid Syllable Transition (ReST) was developed through research at the University of Sydney. It’s an evidence-based intensive intervention for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

This little superstar is about to complete his final appointment of 12 sessions in 3 weeks. We’re keeping it fun with some Halloween pictures between trials.

Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) is one of the evidence-based approaches we use to support children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS).

DTTC focuses on developing the motor planning and movements between sounds needed for clear speech. DTTC doesn't come with a list of words. Instead, we select personalised target words for each child based on their needs and goals.

During each appointment, we use a hierarchy of cues to help the chid be successful. We aim for lots of speech practice and high repetitions so we need to keep things fun and motivating. This week we are using Guess Who?

Speech pathologists work with children to help them develop clear speech sounds. Some of these children have Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) β€” a motor speech disorder that affects how children plan, coordinate and sequence the movements needed for speech. They know what they want to say but have difficulty planning and sequencing these complex movements.

CAS is less common than other speech sound disorders, affecting about 1 child in every 1 000. Other speech sound difficulties that we see in the clinic stem from phonological (rule-based) errors rather than motor planning challenges.

Early, consistent and intensive intervention makes a big difference for children with CAS.
