Acupuncture is increasingly being explored as a complementary therapy for psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune skin condition characterized by red, scaly patches.

Acupuncture can be beneficial to treat psoriasis due to its:

1. Symptom relief: Acupuncture may help reduce the thickness, itchiness, and scales of skin plaques associated with psoriasis.

2. Fewer side effects: Compared to traditional treatments like corticosteroids, acupuncture tends to have minimal side effects.

3. Cost-effectiveness: Acupuncture can be a more affordable treatment option for some patients.

4. Stress reduction: As stress is a known trigger for psoriasis flare-ups, acupuncture's potential to reduce stress and anxiety may be beneficial.

5. Immune system support: Some studies suggest acupuncture might help boost the immune system and increase circulation in affected areas, potentially reducing inflammation and improving skin repair.

6. Complementary approach: Acupuncture can be used alongside conventional psoriasis treatments, enhancing their effectiveness.

How does acupuncture help with Bacterial Vaginosis?

🌺Immune system modulation: Acupuncture can help enhance the immune system, which may aid in fighting off the overgrowth of harmful bacteria associated with BV.

🌺Balancing va**nal flora: By promoting overall body balance, acupuncture may help restore the natural balance of va**nal bacteria, supporting the growth of beneficial Lactobacillus species.

🌺Reducing inflammation: Acupuncture has anti-inflammatory effects, which could help alleviate symptoms associated with BV, such as irritation and discomfort.

🌺Hormonal regulation: Acupuncture may help regulate hormones, particularly estrogen, which plays a role in maintaining va**nal health and pH balance.

🌺Stress reduction: By reducing stress levels, acupuncture may indirectly support va**nal health, as stress can negatively impact the immune system and va**nal flora.

🌺Symptom relief: Acupuncture may help alleviate symptoms like discharge and odor by addressing underlying imbalances in the body.

🌺Complementary approach: When used alongside conventional treatments, acupuncture may enhance overall treatment efficacy and help prevent recurrence of BV.

🌺Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective: In TCM, BV is often seen as a manifestation of "Damp-Heat." Acupuncture points are selected to clear dampness and heat from the body, potentially addressing the root cause of BV according to TCM principles.

It's important to note that while acupuncture shows promise as a complementary treatment for BV. Acupuncture should be considered as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, which may include conventional medical treatments and lifestyle modifications.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is an imbalance of va**nal flora.

🌺Did you know that BV occurs when there is an imbalance in the types and numbers of bacteria normally present in the va**na. It is caused by a change from a Lactobacillus-dominant state to one with high diversity and quantities of anaerobic bacteria.

🌺Normal va**nal flora: A healthy va**na contains many types of bacteria in balance. Lactobacilli are considered the "good" bacteria that help maintain va**nal health .

🌺Bacterial imbalance in BV: In BV, the normal healthy bacteria (particularly lactobacilli) are replaced by an overgrowth of other mixed bacteria. There is an increase in anaerobic bacteria like Gardnerella va**nalis, Atopobium va**nae, Mobiluncus spp, Prevotella spp, and other BV-associated bacteria.

🌺pH changes: The bacterial imbalance leads to changes in va**nal acidity, with BV typically causing an elevated va**nal pH (>4.5).

🌺Symptoms and diagnosis: The imbalance can lead to symptoms like increased discharge, often with a fishy odor, though many women may be asymptomatic. Diagnosis often involves checking for these symptoms and conducting tests to confirm the presence of "clue cells" and altered va**nal pH.

Did you know that chronic stress (liver qi stagnation) has a direct impact on our bodies ability to cope with the external environment, and overload our liver to process toxins?

Chronic stress can weakens our immune function (wei qi) and causes our body to become qi deficient. When this occurs, all of our functions are weakened and fail to do their job, which makes us susceptible to a cascading effect of illnesses to occur such as getting sick, digestive issues, hormonal issues, chronic pain, and chronic inflammation.

Some basic ways to manage our stress levels are to get adequate sleep, eating healthy whole foods, regular exercise, getting out in nature, participating in enjoyable engagements with friends/family or hobbies, and therapy to help with coping strategies.

Our bodies are constantly exposed to toxins from the environment, processed foods, and chemicals. While the body naturally detoxifies through the liver, kidneys, skin, and lungs, eating foods that support these processes can enhance overall health.

Liver Support
Detoxifying foods like leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables provide antioxidants and compounds that boost liver function, helping to neutralize toxins.

Digestive Aid
Fiber-rich foods, such as apples and seeds, promote regular digestion, ensuring toxins are efficiently removed from the body.

Immune System Boost
Garlic, ginger, and turmeric have anti-inflammatory properties that strengthen the immune system, helping it combat toxins more effectively.

Skin Health
Antioxidant-rich foods, like berries and green tea, protect skin and assist in eliminating toxins through sweat.

Reducing Toxin Load
By avoiding processed foods and eating whole, detoxifying foods, the body can focus on healing and regeneration, reducing inflammation and the risk of chronic disease.

Incorporating detoxifying foods supports natural detox processes, promoting better health and energy

Always remember to:

🌿Stay hydrated to help flush out toxins.
🌿Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fiber.
🌿Exercise regularly to promote circulation and sweating.
🌿Get adequate sleep to allow the body time to repair and regenerate.
🌿Reduce exposure to environmental toxins when possible.

The raw food diet trend took the western world by storm in the 90's & 2000's. But did you know that the benefits of this trend are completely opposite to the Chinese Medicine Nutritional Framework around digestive health?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, they have found that heating/light stir frying/steaming your raw food and vegetables made it easier for your Spleen and Stomach to absorb the nutrients.

Due to gastric enzymes and the internal temperature of our stomach, it is easier to break down and absorb the benefits of raw food when it is cooked.

This does not mean that eating raw food is bad for you, however a mixture of cooking techniques with raw food is the perfect balance to strengthen your digestive system.

If you are finding that you feel lethargic, foggy mind, heavy, and weakened digestive system, it could mean that your digestion is working overtime to break down the food you are eating.

To take the load off your stomach, you can swap out your cold morning meal (plain fruit, ice cold smoothies, cold juices, granola & yogurt) for a warming meal a few times per week to balance out the internal temperature of your body with:

- Warm rice porridge (congee)
- Cooked eggs with stir fried veggies
- Warm Broth/Soup/Miso/stews with veggies
- Warm rice with cooked eggs
- Omelettes

What do you normally eat for breakfast?

How does cosmetic acupuncture assist with fine lines?

1. Stimulating collagen production: The tiny needles create micro-traumas in the skin, which stimulates collagen production. Collagen helps improve skin elasticity and can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

2. Improving blood circulation: Acupuncture increases blood flow to the face, which nourishes the skin and promotes a healthier complexion. This improved circulation can help soften fine lines.

3. Promoting skin cell regeneration: The increased blood flow and stimulation from the needles can encourage cellular regeneration, which may help reduce the appearance of fine lines.

4. Relaxing facial muscles: By targeting specific acupuncture points, the treatment can help relax tense facial muscles that contribute to the formation of fine lines, especially around the eyes and mouth.

5. Enhancing overall skin tone and firmness: Cosmetic acupuncture is said to improve muscle tone and skin firmness, which can make fine lines less noticeable.

6. Stimulating fibroblast cells: These cells lie deep within the dermis layer of the skin and are responsible for producing collagen and elastin, key components in maintaining skin's youthful appearance.

7. Cumulative effects: While results may be noticeable after a single treatment, the effects of cosmetic acupuncture are cumulative. A series of treatments (often 6-10 sessions) is typically recommended for optimal results in reducing fine lines.

It's important to note that while cosmetic acupuncture can help with fine lines, it is not equivalent to more invasive treatments like Botox. The results are generally more subtle and natural-looking, focusing on overall skin health and rejuvenation rather than paralysis of facial muscles.

Acupuncture has emerged as a promising complementary treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), offering potential benefits in managing symptoms associated with this complex mental health condition.

1. Symptom Relief: Acupuncture has been shown to significantly alleviate core symptoms of PTSD, such as anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. It can also reduce hyperarousal and promote relaxation, which are crucial for individuals experiencing PTSD.

2. Mechanisms of Action: The therapeutic effects of acupuncture are believed to be mediated through several mechanisms. These include the modulation of the autonomic nervous system, reduction of limbic system activation, and improvement of neuroendocrine function. Acupuncture may also promote neuroprotection, neurogenesis, and synaptic plasticity, which are beneficial for mental health recovery.

3. Safety and Efficac*: Studies have demonstrated that acupuncture is a safe treatment option with minimal side effects. It has been found to be more effective than pharmacotherapy in some cases and can complement other treatments like psychotherapy.

4. Holistic Approach: Acupuncture offers a holistic approach by addressing both the physical and psychological aspects of PTSD. It helps in calming the nervous system, reducing pain, and improving overall well-being, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals who do not respond well to conventional treatments.

Overall, acupuncture represents a viable adjunct therapy for PTSD, providing relief from symptoms and improving quality of life. Please always find a qualified acupuncturist that specializes in mental health.

The "Six Evils" (六邪) are external pathogenic factors that can invade the body through the skin, mouth, or nose, particularly when the body's defenses are weakened. They can act alone or in combination, and their effects can vary depending on the individual's constitution and the prevailing environmental conditions.
1. Wind (风邪) is associated with rapid onset and movement. It tends to cause symptoms that appear suddenly and change quickly. Wind manifests as tremor, convulsions, numbness, itchiness, dizziness, headaches, and rashes that come and go quickly.
2. Cold (寒邪) is a Yin pathogenic factor that damages Yang energy. It causes stagnation and can attract other illnesses. Cold manifests as Cold body and limbs, poor blood circulation, pale face, vomiting, diarrhea, cold painful joints, menstrual pain, and disorders, thin va**nal discharge and bowel movements.
Heat (暑邪) is high in temperature and can cause the body to become bloated as gas gets trapped. It is a Yang pathogenic factor that can disturb body fluids and cause mental disharmony. Heat in the body manifests as heat, thirst, sweating, fatigue, yellow urine, yellow tongue, sudden fainting, fever, red face, red eyes, sore throat, gum swelling, and pain.
Dampness (湿邪) is heavy and sticky, leading to stagnation. It can harm Yang energy and make the body susceptible to various diseases. Damp looks like head pain, chest tightness, sluggishness, sore or swollen joints, poor flexion and extension of limbs, sticky phlegm, cloudy urine, water retention, and weight gain.
5. Dryness (燥邪) consumes body fluids and is particularly damaging to the lungs. It is a Yang pathogenic factor that can easily damage body fluids. Dryness looks like Dry tongue, dry skin, dry hair, dry cough with little or no phlegm, less sweat or no sweat, chapped lips, constipation, dry eyes, and dry throat.
6. Fire (火邪) can burn out and hurt body fluids. It has a violent nature characterized by inflammation and can accelerate blood flow, potentially causing bleeding. Fire causes fever, red face, red tongue, red eyes, sore throat, gum swelling and pain, toothache, constipation, short urine, restlessness, and irritability.
