BOOST YOUR NATURAL FERTILITY FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE MEDICAL FENCE!

The best principles of boosting your natural fertility may come from the integration of modern science and thousands of years practice of wisdom from the east.

Published by a team of Harvard researchers, the `Fertility Diet' study, found women with ovulatory infertility who followed the eating pattern has a 66% lower risk of ovulatory infertility and a 27% reduced risk of infertility from other causes than women who didn't follow the diet closely.

Women following the `Fertility Diet' closely included the following:
1. Less trans-fat (baked and fried foods) and more monounsaturated fat (from foods such as avocado and olive oil)
2. Less animal protein and more vegetable protein
3. More high-fibre, low-glycaemic carbohydrate-rich foods (including whole grains)
4. More vegetarian sources of iron and fewer meat sources
5. Multivitamins
6. High-fat dairy instead of low-fat dairy - (for those who are able to tolerate dairy or to seek substitutes).

In general, eating more vegetables and a variety of types, eating healthy monounsaturated fats instead of saturated and trans fats, increasing your grains to wholegrains, and getting enough calcium-rich foods in your diet was shown to boost natural fertility. The foods that we consume make up all the building blocks of our body and how our fertility is working, so it makes absolute sense to eat well to increase our fertility.

Though, in addition to making good food choices, the ancient wisdom from Chinese medicine will also tell you that dietary choices alone may limit your fertility boost.

Chinese medicine will tell you to eat all your foods warmed. There is quite a debate on raw foods diet & I hear this often with patients, though Chinese medicine will argue that you need to have all foods warmed so as to make more blood and energy, to increase all your building blocks for fertility. It also makes a whole lot of sense, if you consume lots of raw, cold foods you will lower the activity of the digestive enzymes. When you think about it, our bodies are set for 37 degrees & the fridge is 4 degrees! Quite a difference indeed.

I am often asked the question by a lot of my fertility patients `why are my feet so cold?'. In Chinese medicine our feet are warmed from our digestive system so if we are eating cold, raw foods, our feet will remain cold and, so too will our body, and often our lower abdomen, uterus and lower back will feel cold - all these factors affecting our fertility.

So, when next thinking about what to eat to increase your fertility, try thinking about how to eat also - integrating modern science and the wisdom from the east will naturally boost your fertility a whole lot more and you will also feel a little warmer in those cooler months!

Study shows acupuncture to significantly increases pregnancy rates with repeated IVF failure

A study published by Mike Armour in Reproductive Biomedicine found that acupuncture increased pregnancy rates and reduced miscarriages in in vitro fertilization (IVF) patients. This systematic review and meta-analysis of 20 trials, involving 5130 women in Italy, Germany, Australia, USA and more, showed that 3 or more acupuncture treatments before an IVF transfer produced more pregnancies compared to no acupuncture (standard of care). The findings suggest that “acupuncture may have a significant effect on clinical pregnancy rates when used in women who have had multiple previous IVF cycles, or where there was a low baseline pregnancy rate.”

Nerve-Stimulation Therapy for effective pain management.

Developed by Professor Sun Huiqing in 1919, Nerve-Stimulation Therapy has been widely used across the globe to treat a whole range of conditions including acute and chronic pain of various origins throughout the body, from the simplest of muscular pain to the more significant neuropathic pain. Conditions that have been shown to be effective with this treatment include lower back pain, sciatica, frozen shoulder, generalised muscular pain and neuropathic pain that can be associated with various internal conditions including fibromyalgia and cancer pain. Being a simple form of treatment its' effectiveness sometimes surpasses the expectation of both patient and practitioner. Patients who have been experiencing pain for a period of time often report significant relief shortly post treatment or following few sessions.

The practice of Nerve-Stimulation Therapy is the use of a small, non-invasive seven starred needle to lightly stimulate the nerve endings on the surface of the body. According to Professor Sun, by stimulating nerves ending of different skin regions of the body, Nerve-Stimulation Therapy can adjust the balance of the nervous system, namely the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which play an important role in our body's physiological function and pain sensation. The technique allows for a connection to be made from the external body to the internal body via the nervous system.

This technique has a similar degree of sensation to acupuncture that is generally well tolerated by most patients. Treatment plans are developed individually according to a patient's presentation.

Dr. Linhan Bai, 3rd generation from the family of Professor Sun Huiqing learnt the technique directly from his descendents and has now commenced practicing at Spring Health in Ballarat. Dr Bai completed his Western medical training in China before moving to Australia in 2006. Dr Bai has further completed relevant Western medical training in Australia and gained certificate from the Australian Medical Council. Additionally, he has completed two Masters degrees in Applied Science in both Acupuncture clinical practice and research in Acupuncture for Pain Management.

Dr Bai's family, across three generation's, have been practising and integrating both eastern and western medicine to develop this technique and apply this to a wide range of clinical presentations. Prior to moving to Australia, Dr Bai was practising Nerve-Stimulation Therapy in Wuhan, China. Dr Bai specialises in pain management for both muscular skeletal and internal medicine. Nerve-Stimulation Therapy provides an effective and non-invasive solution for various types of pain conditions.

Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicines in modern times.

Chinese herbal medicines work to restore imbalance in the body and may assist with varying health conditions. The origin of Chinese Herbal Medicines in China can be traced back 5000 years, making it one of the oldest and most long-standing medical practices in the world, however the method of its' practice in modern times has changed considerably.

In ancient times, herbs were cultivated organically because of the lack of industrial means. With the increased demand for Chinese herbal medicines, productivity has increased substantially however the need to continue to produce high quality herbal medicines for consumers is paramount. Within Australia, Chinese herbal medicines are regulated by the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Australia). There are more than 200 substances commonly used in Chinese herbal medicine largely plant origin, with some mineral substances used with most practitioners choosing not to use animal based products. There is also preference to use powdered herbal medicines over raw herbs to provide consistent quality. The manufacturing process of powdered herbal medicines involve scientific testing including microscopic analysis, physical and chemical identification and chemical finger printing.

The development of an evidence-based approach in Western medicine now seems strong in influencing the age-old practice of Chinese medicine with anticipated benefits for patients, ensuring patient safety and treatment efficacy. National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and other organisations have funded laboratory research and clinical trials to establish how herbal medicines affect the body and disease and possible herb-drug interactions. Such research is paving the way for future practice of Chinese medicine to be more integrated with conventional medicine.

Below is a case seen in the clinic recently using an integrated approach combining scientific biomedical research findings and traditional Chinese medicine diagnostic methods.

A young male patient presented with Stage 3 Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, a chronic disease of the bile ducts affecting the liver, secondary to Ulcerative Colitis, confirmed by liver biopsy with progressive elevated liver function test results well outside normal reference range. Treatment has been based on restoring balance to the body using Chinese herbal medicines chosen from research findings, and dietary changes to reduce bowel inflammation and support the liver. Four weeks post commencement of treatment liver function tests have returned to within reference range.

Whilst the practice of traditional Chinese medicine stands independent of Western medicine, further research and novel approaches may provide opportunity for a more integrated approach to expand treatment options and improve outcomes.

Double your IVF success rate with acupuncture!

A recent study by Homerton University Hospital in London found that acupuncture can significantly increase your chances of having a baby when undergoing IVF. The study demonstrated the use of acupuncture during an IVF cycle can double your chances of having a baby. The study involved 160 couples experiencing fertility problems, half were assigned to have a series of acupuncture sessions during their IVF cycle. One year on, those who underwent the ancient practice of acupuncture had achieved pregnancy rates of 46.2 percent. Among those who had not had acupuncture, pregnancy rates were 21.7 percent.

The practice of Chinese medicine, both acupuncture and herbal medicines is aimed at correcting imbalances in the body's natural energy flow, promoting an overall sense of well-being. Chinese medicine boosts fertility rates by affecting ovulation and menstrual cycles, enhancing blood flow to the uterus and enhancing endorphin secretion to calm the central nervous system - all of which can contribute to successful conception.

Meredith O'Loughlan has practiced Chinese medicine and nutritional medicine for the past 10 years in women's health and fertility. Prior to this, Meredith worked in the public hospital system for 10 years in allied health in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Oncology & Palliative Care at Monash Medical Centre and The Northern Hospital. Meredith has special interest in providing support and treatment for IVF patients during their treatment.

Chinese medicine has been shown to improve IVF outcomes and is fast becoming an adjunct for patients undergoing such treatment. Please contact (0401496103) for further information.
