Helping everyone do better in supporting theirs and others reproductive mental health

It might be November, and we may have passed through October, which bring Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness (PAILA), Baby Loss Awareness Week (BLAW) and the Wave of Light along with Walks to Remembers.

But here's the thing, baby, infant, and pregnancy loss, and the grief it brings doesn't just happen between October 1st and 31st.

The grief is present, every day, in different ways, sometimes intense and overwhelming, other days as a gentle undercurrent.

Just because the month is over doesn't mean, as family, friends, and colleagues, that we can forger about those close to us who have experienced loss.

If you have someone in your sphere who has experienced the loss of a pregnancy, baby, or infant, check in with them, ask them how they are going, and mention their little ones name.

Let them know if you have seen something that has reminded you of them, and let them know you're thinking of them.

It's taken me a little longer to read through, reflect and unpack the Rapid Review into ART in Australia.

Unsurprisingly, it left me a little frustrated, and wishing politicians could see the reform which is really needed, rather than what feels like an easy way out. I'm not sure it was helped being led by Victoria when they had pulled apart world leading fertility legislation and donor register supports only 18 months ago.

But here we are, with a series of recommendations, none bad, but a feeling that they could indeed have been better, and implemented in a more timely fashion too.

I have put links to both the Rapid Review and the 10 Year Fertility Roadmap in my bio, so if you wish to deep dive they are easy to find and read yourself!

Moving forward, I'm going to continue to be loud, and fight for the best patient care and outcomes for everyone that we can do in this country.

Australia has always had some form of world lead in the ART space, and this should be no different.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback and what you would like to see in the future for ART in Australia.

Infertility, reproductive loss, pregnancy loss, baby loss, and infant loss all impact dads and partners, too.

An already overlooked space, avoided and not spoken about, infertility, pregnancy, and baby loss is often amplified for dads and partners.

Questions about how their wife is going, yet often not how they are.

Services openly focused on women, yet very often forgetting men and partners.

Infertility, pregnancy, and baby loss impact ALL parents, whether they are the one doing the injections or who have carried the pregnancy.

Yes, we need to acknowledge that the experience is different, but dads and partners often take on a silent and seemingly stoic role. But dads and partners' lives are shattered too through infertility, pregnancy, and baby loss.

The experience of dads and partners matters too, so please don't forget to check in on them as well.

And know there are amazing resources for dads toofrom.dad

Embryo loss, whether during development, in the freeze and thaw preparing for embryo transfer, or an embryo that does not lead to a pregnancy, can be a profound loss.

As individuals or couples prepare for IVF, they are often coming from a period of profound frustration and sadness they haven't concieved previously or have experienced pregnancy loss, hope becomes instilled again for a baby.

When an embryo doesn't progress to the much desired baby, immense grief can follow.

Grief at the loss of an embryo not progressing, not thawing or not leading to a pregnancy, is often not understood by those around us, and they often dismiss the impact of embryo loss.

The loss of an embryo is the loss of our hope for the future and the deep wish to grow our family. We have often mapped out or future as we start an IVF cycle, and imagine our lives with this much wanted future baby.

Grief, is understandable when loss occurs, even if the loss is not seen by others as easily as it is seen by us.

World Mental Health Day & Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness intersect every year and never has a theme been more important.

Connecting with your community while navigating mental health is so important as is connecting with community through baby loss.

Both of these areas intersect, and both can cause immense isolation, but there is always someone there to support and connect with.

While social media can have many pitfalls, the strength of community here can be astounding, with so many people sharing their experiences, supporting charity, and breaking down stigma.

Most importantly, creating a community to connect with, when it may be challenging to find them in our physical communities?

How has community supported you through mental health recovery and baby loss experiences?

I'd love to hear which social media accounts have support you to connect. Pop them in the comments.

I have tagged some fabulous supports in these areas, too.
