At 4 years old, children are developing big language skills!

⭐By this age, many children can:

• Answer questions about daily routines

• Understand most wh- questions

• Use longer sentences with words like and, but and because

• Talk about recent events

• Ask lots of questions

• Use pronouns (he/she, me/you) and simple negatives

• Count to five and name some colours

• Start noticing rhyming or similar sounds in words

⭐Tip for parents:

You don’t need to read every word of a book; talking about the pictures your child is interested in builds just as much language! Every child develops at their own pace, but if you have concerns about your child’s speech or language, early support can make a big difference

Turn Taking: my turn/ your turn

Concepts: on, under, over, through

Hearing plays a huge role in how children learn to communicate 🎧💬

Clear access to sound helps little ones develop speech, language, and strong listening skills, which is why early hearing checks are so important. Quick testing can catch issues early and make a big difference in your child’s communication journey.

If you’re concerned your child may need their hearing tested, consider booking an appointment with your local GP or audiologist for a quick check-up.

Creating a sensory-friendly environment can make such a big difference for children who need a little extra support to feel calm, safe, and regulated 🧘‍♀️

Small changes, like softer lighting, reduced noise, predictable routines, and simple sensory tools, can help make everyday spaces feel more comfortable and less overwhelming.
