PLANT FEATURE: ST JOHNS WORT

Whilst most of you may know about St John’s Wort, it is likely it will be due to its use as a ‘natural antidepressant’. Helping with mood is definitely a great use for this plant, but St John’s Wort has so much more to offer!

Natural health industries have pigeonholed St John’s, so let’s make a dive into its traditional and folk history to evolve our understanding of the medicine it has to offer

In Ancient Europe St John’s was both a physical and spiritual medicine - it was used as an ally to ward away bad spirits, curses and black magic. The plant was commonly associated with the faery folk, nature spirits and ‘little people’.

So from long ago, St John’s Wort was recognised as a very special medicine indeed.

Its primary action is to sedate excess nervous tension, and restore nervous tissue. This is why - in some people - it helps to alleviate depression. A more interesting facet of its connection with the nervous system however, is its ability to soothe pain arising from nerve damage. This makes St John’s a very unique plant - and can be used internally and externally in this regard.

St John’s organ affinity is for the liver. Both Traditional Chinese and Western medicine associate the liver with mental health imbalances. The herbalists of the Ancient West prescribed St. John’s for ‘melancholy’. Whilst it is too narrow to say ‘St John’s Wort is for depression’, we do see that via its actions on the liver and nervous system, St John is extremely helpful in moving excess tension, detoxifying the body (an accumulation of toxins can lead to a whole host of mental health symptoms) and restoring the nerves after chronic stress or anxiety.

Another lesser known property of this plant is as an anti-viral - it can be used both topically and internally to combat viral infections.

St John’s Wort is a truly magical ally - it can be used for nerve pain, viral infections, chronic stress, and (especially) liver issues. Often, some of these things are connected, which would make St John’s Wort the right remedy for you!
