Some of you might remember…

We shared just before Christmas that we were getting a Highland cow.

His name was going to be Hamish.

Then on Christmas Eve, it all fell through.

He got sick, and the seller made the call not to go ahead.

At the time, we didn’t really know what to say.

So we didn’t say much after that.

But we’ll be honest — that one stuck.

After wanting Highland cows for over six years, and getting that close…

it felt like it just wasn’t going to happen.

So we stopped looking.

Not in a dramatic way.

Just quietly let it go.

And then recently… these two came up.

And something shifted again.

Now they arrive in four weeks.

Still feels a bit unreal.

But this time, we’re letting ourselves get excited about it again.

Climbing higher, taking risks, figuring it out as they go…

No screens. No pressure. Just kids being kids again.

Not every win is loud.

Sometimes it’s just slowing down, feeling safe, and trusting yourself enough to hold on.

Those are the wins we notice.

There’s something about horses, water, and a setting sun that just resets everything.

No pressure. No expectations. Just being present in the moment.

And for some of our participants… that’s everything.

No filter. No edits. Just one of those “stop for a second” moments.

Some days on the farm feel like chaos… and then you get moments like this that remind you exactly why you keep showing up.

In support work, not all behaviours are what they seem.
What might look like “challenging behaviour” is often someone trying to communicate a need, a feeling, or a response to their environment.

Throwing items might be frustration… or a way of saying “this is too much.”
Withdrawal might not be disengagement… but a sign of overwhelm.
Repetitive movements might not need to be stopped… but could be helping someone regulate and feel safe.

When we shift our perspective, everything changes.

Instead of reacting to the behaviour itself, we slow down and ask —
What is this person trying to tell me?

At Urban Buddy, we focus on understanding before responding.
We look at the environment, the routine, the communication style, and the small cues that often go unnoticed.

Because when behaviour is met with patience, consistency, and the right support —
we see less distress, more trust, and better outcomes.

This is what person-centred support looks like in practice 💛

This is what it’s all about out here… not just the animals, but the confidence, the responsibility, the quiet pride you can’t fake.
