Day 10 comes to an end! Goodbye new friends and old ones too. See you again! We’ve been through some challenging moments together bonded through tears and hugs and shared learning, and also had a lot of fun. And then of course the main reason we are here is the kids who need all the support they can get. It could never be enough! A big thanks to Jorge Aranda for bringing me in and trusting me with his project. I appreciate you and what you do 🧚🏻‍♂️

Let's talk Migraines

What are they and what causes them?

The International Headache Society classifies a headache as a migraine when you have at least two of these symptoms:

one sided headache
moderate to severe
throbbing pain
aggravated by movement
AND you have one of these associated symptoms:

nausea
vomiting
sensitivity to light
sensitivity to noise
AND the headache lasts for between 4 and 72 hours.

You may also have other symptoms that can include

sensitivity to smell
aura (visual disturbances such as bright zigzag lines, flashing lights, difficulty in focusing or blind spots lasting 20-45 minutes)
difficulty in concentrating, confusion

About 5 million Australians are estimated to suffer from migraines, and 70% of those are women. They are much more common if you have immediate family who suffers from migraine, and therefore though to be partly hereditary.

Exactly why we get migraines isn’t completely understood, however we do know that
essentially, migraine is caused by the interaction between the brain and the cranial blood vessels. We can think of migraines a bit like a “thunderstorm" in our nervous system where our brains become irritable and hypersensitive to senses and stimulation.

In migraine there is a change to the release of neurotransmitters in our brain, adrenaline is release from our adrenal glands and there is a rush of blood in the circulation to the brain. The cranial nerve nuclei become irritated and very active resulting in the feeling of pain in the head (often on one side) along with sensitivities to sensations.

As an Osteopath I have been helping people with Migraines for 2 decades, and I have seen that rarely two migraines are that are experienced exactly the same. Sometimes they are a one-off event, and sometimes come more regularly.

If you would like to talk to me about your headaches, I offer a complimentary 10 minute phone consultation where we can discuss what you are experiencing and some of the best ways to help improve your quality of living. I’d love to help!

Tension Headaches - what are they?

Tension-type headache is the most widespread form of headache. Recent international studies have shown the average prevalence as 36% for men and 42% for women which means that about 7 million Australians are likely to experience tension-type headaches.

Tension headaches often start in teenage years and persist through into adulthood. Not every one who gets tension headaches has them often, and sometimes only on occasion when experiencing triggers. Some people are unfortunate enough to experience a headache of some form every day for many years.

What does a tension headache feel like?

Many tension headaches feel like dull ache or tight, heavy band around the head - often known has headband distribution. It's often felt over both sides of the head but can be one side. Often but not always there will be an ache in the back of the head and top of the neck. Your neck may feel tight and taut.

Sometimes these headaches can be accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light and noise, fatigue, trouble concentrating or sleeping.

They may last a short period of time or continue for a number of days.

Headaches will often be more frequent during periods of stress and tension.

While painkillers are often the most utilised way to ease an active headache, there are many other methods to reduce the severity of pain and how often you experience a headache. These can be thought of as preventative care.

If you would like to talk to us about your headaches, we offer a complimentary 10 minute phone consultation where we can discuss what you are experiencing and some of the best ways to help improve your quality of living. We listen, we care.

Are you a migraine sufferer?....You are not alone.

Data from 2018 tells us that 4.9 million Australians have likely experienced a migraine in their lifetime. Unfortunately migraine is often not a once off event, with most people experiencing migraines from a few a year to several per week.

Migraines typically affect women more than men, beginning in their teens and continuing long into adulthood.

23% of all households contain someone who gets migraines. Nearly all those who experience migraine experience a reduction in their social activities and work capacity.

The direct and indirect costs of migraine is estimated to be approximately $35.7 billion annually to the Australian economy.
