Unsafe RACGP standards put at risk patients in accredited General Practices!

In the interests of the safety of patients attending general practices in Australia, we have recently launched a petition to pressure the RACGP to improve the accreditation standards to at least a safe level.

Currently, your GP practice is not required to have a defibrillator, doesn't need any child resuscitation training, doesn't need any training in using the emergency resuscitation equipment or drugs required in the practice, and is only required to be as proficient at resuscitation as the general public i.e. the average patient in the waiting room.

This situation is simply not safe and also appalling in a developed nation such as ours. We have made several attempts to bring these matters to their attention and even assist them to improve this situation, however, the RACGP has repeatedly refused to even consider improvements to reach even basic standards of safety for patients in practices. The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, through the National General Practice Accreditation Scheme, is now looking into these failures by the RACGP in providing safe standards for accreditation, however, the public needs to also voice their objections to this unsafe situation being tolerated by the peak GP organisation.
