International Day of People with Disability - 3 December
Today we recognise International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), a global United Nations day dedicated to increasing awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.
Since 1992, this day has highlighted the barriers, physical, technological and attitudinal, that still limit full participation, and the opportunities we all have to remove them. In Australia, it’s a collective effort involving government, community groups, organisations, schools, businesses and individuals working together for change.
The 2025 theme, “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” is a reminder that inclusion isn’t a one-day commitment. It’s something we build through everyday actions, conversations and systems that genuinely empower people with disability to live with independence, dignity and choice.
At HEDSS, we see the impact of true inclusion every day, in safe homes, meaningful connections and opportunities that support people to thrive. Today is a moment to celebrate the strengths and stories of people with disability, acknowledge the progress made, and recommit to the work still ahead.
Together, we can help create communities where everyone belongs.
