Do you know how to breathe? Sounds like a silly question, right!

Take a minute to focus on your breath.
Are your shoulders rising as you inhale? Are you breathing into your upper chest and ribcage? Yes. This is called Apex breathing and it means you are carrying a lot of tension in your shoulders and upper back, your sympathetic nervous system is engaged (fight/flight response) and your core muscles are switched off.

Engaging your diaphragm when you breathe (ventral breathing) will support your spine, relax the muscles in your shoulders and neck and calm your nervous system. It will increase the oxygen in your blood, making it easier for your body to release gas waste from your lungs, so many more good things will happen when you start ventral breathing! Your body will begin to work as it should.

How to breathe correctly:
While laying on your back, place your hand on your diaphragm, inhale slowly trying to imagine you are blowing your belly up like a balloon, lifting your hand toward the ceiling. If you are an apex breather, this is going to feel very wrong - keep going - Start slow and shallow at first, breathe in through your nose for the count of 3, exhale from your mouth for the count of 4.
Feel the stress melt off your shoulders, your head will become lighter, you might even get a little buzz run through your body. Practise this every night before sleep.
Start checking in on your breathing throughout the day and take 5 minutes to practise ventral breathing.

Soon enough it will be your natural state and you will look back at how much it changed your life!

On the days when it feels like you will never get through this season, this period, this transition — please remember all of the mountains you have scaled before.

Please remember all of the nights you spent convinced that you’d never move beyond where you were in that very moment. One day, something small brought you a little ease, and then a little more. You waited. You realized that everything was going to be okay, even if it doesn’t always feel okay. You let the waves of all those big feelings crash over you, and then you let them recede.
You found courage. You did things you once did not believe you could do, even if those things were just finding the will to wake up and face another day. You found softness.

You found yourself.

You found forms of love you never expected, you began to appreciate what you couldn’t see before. You began to feel like you were enough, because you decided what would be enough for you.

You developed resilience.

You explored the perimeters of what your heart could hold, and how much it could process. You discovered that your strength is limitless, a truth we often don’t know until we are tested, until we are asked to dig it out from beneath our doubts and fears and false beliefs.

Over time, what once seemed impossible became ordinary.

The life you have today is a mere dream of the past. The things you do right now were once the things you only could have ever prayed to have. Please, do not forget that, when you most fear the future.

Each time you have stepped forward, the road rose to meet you — and it will again.

The Chinese Medicines Body-Energy Clock is built upon the concept of the cyclical ebb and flow of energy throughout the body.
The clock is divided into 12 two-hour intervals each responsible for the associated bodily function.

Following with the theme of Winter and the element of Water, I wanted to look at the ways the time of day can affect your quality of life, when symptoms are misdiagnosed or masked with pharmaceuticals.

BLADDER 3-5pm
This is the time of the Bladder when metabolic wastes move into the kidney’s filtration system. This is the perfect time for intellectual concentration through work or study, however, if you are becoming fatigued or are feeling irritated, it is likely you have a block in the bladder meridian. Another cup of tea is advised as is drinking a lot of water to help aid the detoxification process.

KIDNEY 5pm-7pm
This is the time of the Kidneys when the blood is filtered and the kidneys work to maintain proper chemical balance. This is the perfect time to have dinner and to activate your circulation either by walking, having a massage or stretching. An imbalance may present as a rise in fearful thoughts of physical or financial security, at this time.

By understanding that every organ has a repair/maintenance window to keep on a daily basis, we have the opportunity to learn how to treat ourselves for improved health and well-being.
If by 3pm you are hitting a lull and craving sugary foods, then we can look at ways to increase the bladder meridian energy to overcome it. One really simple way is by increasing our water intake, dehydration is a common cause for afternoon cravings, we also know that 3pm-7pm is the time the body is using our bodies water stores to prepare for detoxification.
It is important to also look at the emotional aspect of the element.
Some questions I may ask in session are: What are you doing when you hit this lull? If it is work related, I would ask whether you have any fears holding you back from progressing in your career? Are you afraid of rejection? Failure? Addressing this emotion will strengthen the organ and improve your physical health for the long term, reducing and eliminating other symptoms associated with this imbalance.

Winter is symbolised by the element of water. In Kinesiology water represents letting go, to flow, to move, to feel.
Blocks in this area can present as excessive boundaries, poor social skills, rigid attitudes towards loved ones and a feeling of disconnect.

Fear is the main emotion that comes up when working with blockages in the water element.
What fears are keeping you stuck?
Can you transform fear to awe as we move through this season to the time of planting and the new beginnings of Spring.

I hope you enjoy some of these nurturing tips to beat the winter blues.
