Can AI help us all become geniuses? "AI as a tool becomes a or vehicle through which any human being can, in a way attain talent. This is an amazing thing. It increases the talent of every individual so that all of us can touch the genius within unexpressed amazing things. So that's gotta be pretty cool." Ed Cooke on how AI can help us become more talented, in Episode 1 of Mindful AI, hosted by Natasha Fong.

Did you know that when the calculator first came out, people took to the streets to protest?

"Like the calculator that can calculate quicker than you or I can, when that first happened, people were very shocked and they protested on the streets against calculators. Every time that technology has come up and done something as well as we can, whether that was back in the agricultural revolution when it was digging up earth faster than we could be, introducing calculator, introducing sewing, machine manufacturing, and so on. Each one of these moments was, us as a human race getting a bit upset and then going I guess we're gonna do that now." Dr Michael Kollo on Episode 3 of Mindful AI, hosted by Natasha Fong.

Diversity in AI - where are our underrepresented AI experts?

"We also need to talk to many different stakeholders, many different cultures, whether it's people that aren't involved because the models haven't been built on them. And acknowledge that there's always gonna be a bias and there's a massive shortage of AI experts." A/Prof Carl Hayden Smith in Episode 5 of Mindful AI, hosted by

Why is mindfulness in product development important?

"Recognising that the dignity of each person is at stake in interacting with these products that is something to be very mindful of. You don't necessarily leave an interaction unscathed by the product, particularly when it's deciding something about your future." Lorenn Ruster on Episode 4 of Mindful AI, hosted by Natasha Fong.

What value systems should regulations on AI be based?

"Lots of people are calling for regulation right now in terms of ethics and AI. That kind of belays an assumption that we currently have a system that has uniform understanding of right and wrong ...as a human race, I think we have different value systems. Anytime you introduce an agent into that, just the same as if you introduce a person to that, if you have children, for example, you know that they're gonna be navigating a lot of these grey areas as well." Michael Kollo on value systems, Episode 3 of Mindful AI, hosted by Natasha Fong.

What is AI bias, really? "I'm always frustrated when there's talk of AI bias. Because AI bias as a conceptual framework seems to indicate that there's an objective way of seeing things. But actually what we're talking about is an incredibly rich field of different ways minds can be attuned to the truth of the world." Ed Cooke on truth and bias, Episode 1 of Mindful AI, hosted by Natasha Fong.

How can we use AI to overcome our limitations?

"How do we facilitate these technologies to overcome some of our limitations? The imagination is the key. It's a case of how do we make sure that we remain channels, that we don't just get all of our ideation done by the machines? How do we make sure that we don't atrophy the imagination like we have been by outsourcing, how do we make sure that the imagination is fueled?" A/Prof Carl Hayden Smith on Episode 5 of Mindful AI, hosted by Nat Fong.

"When we think about the future of AI... technology's not the problem. It's humans that are the ones that generally create the problems when we use AI." Jada Andersen on Episode 6 of Mindful AI, hosted by .

"People that are realising that what we're building is not neutral. It's infused with values. It's infused with an agenda, whether we're conscious of it or not. Now we are conscious that this is the case and we are conscious that it is shaping a future. What future do we want it to be shaping?" Lorenn Ruster on Episode 4 of Mindful AI, hosted by Natasha Fong.

Social media largely encourages the opposite of mindfulness - could AI amplify this through more powerful ways of capturing user attention?

"At the moment, what we're doing is social media is probably opposite of mindfulness. We're distracting people, we're are pushing them around. We're trying to get them to react but never be in the moment, centred, in their body and be in the immediate thought. And so if we do nothing, AI would just be pushed into the social media circus and just be a more powerful way of getting us engaged in videos and conversations and constantly outward facing." Dr Michael Kollo on Episode 3 of Mindful AI, hosted by Natasha Fong.

How is AI human-like? "Whenever we touch a memory, it morphs in connection with the new experience. Memory and imagination are very intertwined and so, these very human elements are some of the elements we're now seeing in generative AI. The challenge comes in is that these systems are just so vast and can absorb so much that you can actually feed these systems" on human elements of AI, in Episode 1 of Mindful AI.
