There is no bad place to be on the poly vagal ladder except when we get stuck in a chronic cell danger response and then we are open to chronic disease and well we aren't driving the bus.

Climbing the ladder is a slow process of showing our bodies that we are there and listening through gentle, short daily practices.

Functional freeze is in the middle of dorsal vagal which is complete shut-down and sympathetic fight and flight.

This isn't about fixing something it's about building capacity.

My daily practices are EFT, somatic inquiry and gentle body movements.

Orienting is one of the fastest ways to send the brain the signal of support and safety.

Each time you orient to what's supporting you, your limbic system receives a signal that it's safe to relax.

This is my mantra at the moment!

Anytime I am feeling discomfort in my body, I bring awareness to it, I feel where it is in my body and then I make a choice from a conversation with my body.

For example a 10 minute walk for me at the moment is so uncomfortable. My feet ache, my legs feel heavy and the joints stiff, I feel it's hard to breath and a tightness in my chest.

As I'm walking I place a hand on my chest, bring awareness to these sensations, feel them and look around the external environment (orienting) as I say in this moment, right here right now, I am ok. I then make a choice if my body is ok I keep walking and if not I can take a rest and continue when I feel ok.

This is a first step to start rewiring and bringing a sense of calm and safety to the body when normally we may ignore the feelings and push through them or spiral into thoughts of I'm not ok and there is something wrong with me, which generally perpetuates our sympathetic state as I am normally running in a fight response.

So by doing this little process I am letting my body know that I am listening and that I am there for myself.

Listening to a podcast and this came up and I pondered on it for a while and was like yes this makes so much sense.

I know for myself that I place far more energy into the shaming and guilt around what I am eating rather than just eating and enjoying and really revelling in the food.

Now I am not saying that we should go hell for leather and just eat crap. I am saying that if it's a one off, like the eighty twenty rule. Eat 80% healthy and 20% whatevers. Can it really hurt. In my own journey I am really experiencing it's more about the emotional side over what we are actually eating.

This year for me is all about feeling safe and doing things in a slow and more regulated, titrated way. This includes my approach to my body and what I am feeding her with including the feelings.

I have a couple of tools that I use, being EFT, somatic inquiry and TRE.

My opinion there is no quick fixes and the body works at her own pace which challenges my impatient part, that is foreshore. Though I am slowly being able to sit with my impatient self 🙃.

Would be grateful to share these tools with you.

You know when I listen to maybe a podcast or read a book and you hear something that you ponder on, this was one of those moments.

I am loving learning about my body, nervous system and parts of me and how they all interact together to form, well me.

I have shamed, rejected and abandoned myself for soooooo long and I am really enjoying discovering all aspects of me and pondering on them. The more I slow down the more I really start to get it.

Is it easy, f**k NO!! Is it necessary, f**k YES!!

Babies are unable to regulate themselves, they just don't know how to do this. They co regulate with their care givers and when you look around society well allot of adults just don't know how to regulate themselves. This was something I didn't know how to do until several years ago. It's not something that we are taught and well frankly we would all benefit from being taught is how to regulate.

My priority in life is safety and regulation firstly for myself and then that flows through to others.

Something that was really empowering for me was after using and practising EFT, both personally and professionally was I started to notice that in certain relationships I no longer would feel triggered and react with anger or hiding away. I started noticing that most of the time I wouldn't even realise till after the event that wow I didn't react, I didn't even really notice the smart comment or the dig at me. I was also able to set a boundary in those relationships and say no!!!!!

Maybe this is something you would like to explore more for yourself.
