This is my first post on this page and my story. Today marks exactly one year since I quit drinking and it’s honestly been a life-changing year.
My problem was, like so many, I didn’t have an off switch. I could go days or weeks without a drink but as soon as I had one I wanted more and more and so began the constant and vicious cycle.
Just over a year ago I had a drunken fall. The next morning I awoke to an excruciating pain in my lower back and, with no improvement after two days I went for an X-ray. The results showed I had crushed one of my lower vertebrae. My doctor told me there was little that could be done, I was upset and so annoyed having caused this injury myself. I had many falls, bumps and bruises over the years but nothing as bad as this. My then 19 year old daughter tearfully told me that night how she wants me around when she has children. I lost my Mum when I was 19 and so could absolutely relate to how she was feeling.
So that was it, I decided to get sober and my last drink was 11 March 2025. On recommendation from a friend, I had some physio for my back and when I felt better, I joined a gym in July. My back is healed and strong. I have lost 16kg, am almost at my ideal weight and the lightest I have been in over 10 years. I am strong and determined and can honestly say I will NEVER drink alcohol again.
Sobriety has given me:
• good health, both mentally and physically;
• freedom;
• clarity;
• true happiness;
• peace;
• stronger relationships;
• time – no more wasted days hungover in bed (and believe me, I suffered!);
• money.
It’s a no brainer really - I just wish I had done it years ago but it’s never too late.
