What does a naturopath do?

Naturopathic medicine is a science-based natural health primary care system. Naturopaths aim to identify and treat the underlying causes of illness and disease with the core principal of healing through nature using therapies that are gentle, non-invasive, and beneficial. Naturopaths treat the whole person, rather than individual symptoms, combining nutritional education, herbal medicines, and lifestyle counselling.

What training do naturopaths have?

Naturopaths complete a 4-year full-time Bachelor Degree in Health Science – Naturopathy, studying chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, psychology, pathology, and herbal and nutritional medicine.

How can naturopathy benefit your health and wellbeing?

The body has an inherent ability to maintain and restore health. Naturopaths assist this healing process by removing obstacles to enhance your healing.

Every moment in the morning is precious, no one has the time to waste with a long preparation of breakfast. This is one of my favourite simple green smoothies, easy to prepare and is naturally sweetened with a little fruit (no added sugars) and loaded with yummy goodness.

Spinach is rich in vitamins A, C and K, magnesium, iron and manganese. Eating this leafy green veggie may benefit eye health, reduce oxidative stress and reduce blood pressure levels among other health functions. Chia seeds are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and protein, are rich in antioxidants, and they provide fibre, iron and calcium. Omega-3 fatty acids help raise HDL cholesterol, the "good"
cholesterol that protects against heart attack and stroke and may help reduce inflammation.
Bananas are rich in potassium and fibre. Coconut water is a great electrolyte as it contains magnesium, potassium, sodium and calcium. Also a source of manganese, protein, vitamin C and fibre making it a delicious source of hydration and an antioxidant. Enjoy your green smoothie breakfast!

The new year is upon us. Welcome the opportunity to believe in yourself and create your own magic this year. Fear can hold us back from moving forward with our goals. Life is too short to let your fear from pursuing your dreams and living your best life. As you begin your new year ask yourself some simple questions as you ponder your 2020 goals:

1. How healthy do I want to be this year?
2. What shall I release that is holding me back?
3. What thoughts or beliefs belong to the old me?
4. What do I believe that really works for me?
5. What do I want to bring into my life?
6. What opportunities are open to me?
7. What difference would achieving my goal make to my life?
8. What resources can I use to support my goals?
9. What small steps can I take to begin my journey?
10. Notice what worked previously and reflect on it.

I wish you the most amazing 2020, however it looks for you. May it bring you a renewed passion for life filled with love, joy, abundance and good health.

Christmas and New Year celebrations often mean overindulgence of food and drink, this is where milk thistle (Silybum marianum, with active constituent silymarin, a flavanoligan) comes in handy! Scientifically proven to protect the liver from toxins and damage by overindulgence of alcohol and rich, fatty foods. Milk thistle is a traditional herb used to support healthy liver detoxification due to its powerful antioxidant action and helps reduce the morning after nausea, headache and upset stomach, and aids in the renewal and regeneration of healthy liver cells. So those looking for a little extra support this festive season, why not try some milk thistle.

If you can keep your alcohol consumption to a dull roar during the festivities, congratulations! Take care of yourself while you are out and about, drink lots of water before you go out and try swap a glass of water for every alcoholic drink you consume. And keep eating healthy snacks while you’re drinking, this will slow the absorption of alcohol, helping you stay in control. Here’s to a fabulous New Year filled with good health and new opportunities!
