November 19 is International Mens Day, a day dedicated to recognising the positive contributions men make to society, promoting their health and wellbeing, and encouraging positive role models for future generations. This day is an important opportunity to address mens health issues that are often overlooked and a big one is fertility.

It is estimated that approximately one in ten couples will experience fertility problems - luckily many of the causes of infertility are understood and advances in assisted reproductive technology can now provide support for those struggling to conceive.

So, when should you see a specialist about fertility?

🌱 If the female partner is under 35, and the couple has been trying to conceive for more than 12 months.
🌱 If the female partner is aged between 35 and 37, and the couple has been trying to conceive for six months, and particularly if the male partner is more than five years older than the female partner.
🌱 If the female partner has irregular periods or either partner has a known fertility issue.
🌱 If you have concerns, it is still best to seek advice from your general practitioner.

Did you know that the formation of healthy s***m takes approximately two months, and the maturation of eggs occurs roughly 100 days prior to ovulation? This means that your diet, lifestyle, and general health today will be impacting your reproductive health two-three months from now!

Male factor infertility accounts for approximately 40% of those couples failing to conceive.

To make an accurate assessment of s***m quality, scientists take a semen sample and analyse it under a microscope, from these samples they can then estimate:

⚪ the concentration of s***m
⚪ the total s***m count
⚪ the percentage of motile or moving s***m
⚪ how well the s***m can move
⚪ how much they stick together
⚪ the number of s***m that have a normal appearance
