At Xavier, we have been providing disability support to Brisbane children and families for over 70 years. 🌈 Bringing art, connection and community to our streets! 🌟

Yesterday, our Art Therapist Charlotte Lanchester, with Sandra Daniels, GM Clinical Services, attended the Artforce Awards at Brisbane City Hall – celebrating the amazing artworks transforming our Brisbane streets.

We were so proud to be nominated in the “Best Organisation” category for our traffic signal box artwork beside Xavier Place in Yeerongpilly. The mural celebrates identity, strength, interconnectedness and community and shines a light on the individuality of the children and young people we support and who helped bring the artwork to life. 💛

A huge thank you to Brisbane City Council and Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner for hosting such a wonderful event that celebrates creativity, community and connection. 🎨✨

👟 Mastering shoelaces, step by step

Learning to tie shoelaces can feel tricky for some children, including those with sensory differences. 💛

These tips can help:
👀Use a visual example for each step so your child doesn’t have to process everything at once
💬Give verbal prompts, like “make a bunny ear” for a specific step
👐🏽Try gently guiding their hands one step at a time rather than the whole sequence
🏃🏼‍♀️A bit of movement before starting can help your child to regulate

As Queensland’s peak body for children with developmental delay, we help families navigate the support available. If you’d like further information, reach out to: developmentaldelay@xavier.org.au 🌟

🧱 Building connections in the community

Liam, Colton, Marcus and Joel headed out together to BrisBricks Lego Convention at Chandler and had an absolute ball!

From incredible creations to shared moments of excitement, the day was all about connecting with each other, their interests and with the wider community.

These are the moments that matter: getting out, trying new things and being part of something bigger. 💛

🎶 Sound ON for full effect! 🎶

Music Therapist Becca led a fun music session with Xavier Place guests Riley and Marcus, exploring the power of group drumming. 🥁✨

Watch as they jam together, feel the rhythm, and then—here comes the fun part—wait for the big pause when the drumming stops! That’s when Marcus and Riley respond perfectly to the auditory cue, showing incredible teamwork.

Drumming is a great way to engage in meaningful collaboration. And as you can see, these two absolutely nailed it! ❤️

💙 Helping Trevor eat safely this Swallowing Awareness Day

Mealtimes are an important part of family life, a chance to connect, share and enjoy time together. For children like Trevor with dysphagia, the right support can make these everyday moments safer, more comfortable and more enjoyable.

At Xavier, our speech pathologists and dietitians work together with families to support children and young people to eat and drink safely and enjoy mealtimes with their loved ones.

💬 Have your say and help shape a more inclusive Queensland

The 2026 Voices of Queenslanders with Disability Survey is now live. Have your say as a family member, carer or supporter of a young person with disability and help shape a more inclusive future.

Working together, Griffith University, Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) and the Queensland Government want to hear from you. They want to better understand how life is going for Queenslanders with disability, what is going well and what could be better.

Have your say by 17 April.

💙 Thank you Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust

We’re thrilled to share that Xavier Place has received generous grant support from the Lord Mayor's Charitable Trust This funding will help expand creative arts opportunities and upgrade equipment and outdoor spaces - supporting more moments of creativity, connection and fun for our young guests.

Late last year, we welcomed the Lady Mayoress to Xavier Place, showing her around and sharing what makes Xavier Place so special for the children and young people who spend time with us.

Sandra and Charlie from Xavier Place recently attended the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust General Grant Presentation at Brisbane City Hall, celebrating alongside Brisbane City Council representatives and the many organisations working to strengthen our community.

Support like this means the world to the children, young people and families who are at the heart of everything we do and will make a real difference at Xavier Place.

Thank you for all that you do supporting Brisbane communities. 💙

To all the women of Xavier, thank you for everything you do.

Happy International Women’s Day! 💜

💛 Did you know?

Xavier is Queensland’s Peak Body for children with developmental delay.

What does being a Peak Body actually mean?

It means we work to make sure the voices of Queensland children with developmental delay — and their families — are heard, supported and represented.

This looks like:

🧭 Sharing clear, accessible information for families, carers and communities, and helping you find the right supports
🔗 Connecting families to the right organisations, services and representative bodies across Queensland
📞 Providing phone and online support to help families navigate systems and next steps
🗣️ Working with government to share information about the challenges families face, and helping shape supports
🌈 Building understanding and inclusion through education and awareness for communities, workplaces and organisations.

At the heart of it all, our role is about advocacy, connection and making life easier to navigate for families not just today, but into the future.

Music and magic at Xavier Place 🎶💛

When Abbey and her support worker, Jade, popped into Xavier Place for a little pampering—Abbey getting her nails done—a quiet moment blossomed into something beautiful. Lily asked to sit with Abbey and play the keyboard with Music Therapist Becca, and soon everyone at Xavier Place joined in, dancing, laughing and enjoying the music together.
