🎶💓 From heartbeat to music!

Recently at Xavier Place, our team put our new digital stethoscope to the test. This amazing tool will not only support our clinical nursing team in their everyday care but open new possibilities for our creative therapy team.

Registered Nurse Zoe recorded Deanna’s heartbeat, which Music Therapist Becca then used as the tempo for a songwriting project, turning it into a beautiful piece of music.

A huge thank you to sponsor Dr David Yeates and the Grill’d Local Matters program for making this possible. Your generosity helps us create meaningful experiences for the people we support. 💜

🚆☕ Morning adventures at South Bank!

This week, Joel and Tim helped welcome Riley, a new guest at Xavier Place, heading out together with Support Workers Chloe and Yuly and Registered Nurse Ellie. They caught the train to South Bank and enjoyed morning tea.

The boys loved spending time together and exploring their community. These everyday moments help build confidence, connection and a sense of belonging and we’re so proud to support them.

🌞 Finding your summer rhythm

As the long summer holidays approach, families may look forward to slower days and more time together but a change in routine can be challenging for children with developmental delay or disability. 💛

Creating a gentle daily rhythm can help. Try setting up simple routines like morning walks, music time before lunch, or story time after dinner. A visual calendar can also help your child feel more comfortable with what’s coming next.

Small steps towards predictability can help make the holidays a time of calm, connection and fun. 🌞

✨ Then and Now: Lochlainn and Becca

Did you know? Five years ago, Becca — now well-known to many as our music therapist — was Lochlainn’s support worker!

Today, they still get to catch up when Lochlainn comes to stay with us at Xavier Place. It’s amazing to see our children and young people and our team grow and thrive over time and how connections last! 💙

Whether it’s exploring prehistoric creatures or getting creative with Lego, we love to see how shared experiences help build connection and joy for the children and young people we support.

💛Helping children breathe better and stay healthy 🌬️

At Xavier, our physiotherapists know that strong lungs give children more energy, help them play, and join in everyday life. For children with complex disability, keeping the lungs healthy can be challenging but it is very important.
That’s why we’re working with Queensland Children’s Hospital on new programs to support respiratory health. We help families with:

✅ Safe airway clearance techniques
✅ Fun ways to stay active and strengthen lungs
✅ Nutrition and daily care tips

Healthy lungs mean fewer hospital visits and more time enjoying the things kids love!

🎨 Our Xavier Place artists shine! 🏡

We’re so proud to share that guests of Xavier Place have entered their artwork “Home Away From Home” in the Challenge Community Services Art Competition, 13–18 years category.

Their work captures what Xavier Place means to our young guests — a space of safety, creativity and belonging. 💛

✨ Voting is now open until 17 November and we’d love your support to help celebrate the creativity of our young artists!

🎶 Creating musical memories at Xavier Place

Keira and our student music therapist James used music technology to write and record an original song — complete with Keira’s own heartbeat and vocalisations! 💗
Using her favourite communicative gestures for ‘yes’ and ‘no’, Keira made creative choices at every step, from the chords to the instruments.

Music technology opens up exciting ways for children and young people to explore songwriting and self-expression. For Keira, it was a special way to capture a piece of her identity and share it with friends, family and the Xavier Place team.

💛 OT Week 2025: Occupational Therapy in Action 💛

This OT Week recognises the incredible impact occupational therapists make every day. The 2025 theme, Occupational Therapy in Action, celebrates the creativity, problem-solving and compassion at the heart of OT practice.

For Liam, OT support from Xavier has helped him find new ways to get around and build his independence as he’s grown. Together with his family, it’s meant having the confidence and practical support to get out, travel and share more of life’s adventures. From wheelchair and vehicle modifications to a beach chair and even caravan adaptations, Liam’s dad Mick says their family is grateful for the support that’s helped make so many special moments possible.

🎨💜 Celebrating Children’s Week at Xavier Place

To mark Children’s Week and celebrate children’s rights, we enjoyed a beautiful, creative arts therapy session at Xavier Place. Together, Bailey, Maddie, Jess and the team explored what helps us feel safe, supported and heard, sharing themes of family, wellbeing, identity and interests.

We also created a wonderful artwork representing “The Right to Be Me”, and finished the session with some group baking and cupcakes — a sweet way to celebrate our voices and creativity! 🧁✨
