We are excited to introduce Chatter Buddy to our community.

Chatter Buddy is an interactive AI tool that allows our residents to have real conversations about all sorts of topics. Chatter Buddy can communicate in dozens of different languages, meaning residents can have conversations in their native language. When engaging with Chatter Buddy, you can ask questions, have a friendly chat, find out information, or simply enjoy some company whenever you feel like it.

It’s a fun way to help beat loneliness and boredom, spark curiosity, and even assist as a translator when needed. This is one way we’re using technology to support connection, engagement and wellbeing at St Nicholas.

UPDATE: Thank you to our wonderful community. We are pleased to let you know that we received donations of two bassinets, which are welcome additions to our home. Thank you ❤

We’re reaching out with a special request.

For some people living with dementia, caring for babies and lifelike dolls can be incredibly comforting. It taps into long-held nurturing instincts, gives a lovely sense of purpose, and can ease anxiety through simple moments like cuddling, talking to, and caring for a “baby”.

To support this, we are currently looking for a donation of a baby bassinet (not a toy bassinet) that we can safely use with our residents during these sessions.

If you have a bassinet in good condition that you no longer need, we would be so grateful for your support. Please email debra.khokhar@stnichs.com.au or contact reception if you can help.

We are grateful to our wonderful community for always supporting our residents in such meaningful ways.

With 2025 behind us we reflect on what was a year of shared moments, steady care and meaningful celebrations, alongside times that asked for compassion, patience and presence. Through it all, our community continued to show up for one another in ways both big and small.

We wanted to share just some highlights from what was a very full year. The following photos capture the celebrations of special days and special people.

Independence Day: On March 25 we celebrated Independence Day with morning tea, dancing, music and cultural costumes. It was heartwarming to hear residents singing the Greek national anthem with pride.

Easter: In April, we honoured Easter traditions through Holy Week activities and coming together to share traditional foods and red eggs.

Mother’s Day: In May we celebrated Mother’s Day with a lovely high tea, thoughtful gifts, and time together to honour the special women in our lives.

Paniyiri: Also in May we showcased St Nicholas at Australia's largest Greek festival, whilst enjoying the wonderful food and culture.

Father’s Day: In September we came together to celebrate Father's Day, to show our appreciation with treats, small gifts, and heartfelt moments of recognition.

Oxi Day: In October we marked Oxi Day with a heartfelt commemoration, remembering courage and resilience through ceremonies and shared reflections.

Visit of His Eminence Metropolitan Ignatius of Madagascar and His Grace Bishop Bartholomew of Brisbane: In November we were honoured to welcome His Eminence Metropolitan Ignatius of Madagascar and His Grace Bishop Bartholomew of Brisbane, whose visit brought inspiration, blessings, and a meaningful connection with our community.

St Nicholas Day: In December, we came together for our annual St Nicholas Day celebrations, enjoying festive music, shared meals, and the generosity of our community, raising vital funds for our home.

Through these and many other wonderful days, we thank our residents, families, staff, volunteers and wider community for being part of the year that was. As we look ahead, we do so with appreciation for what 2025 has given us and happy anticipation for what this new year will bring us all.

Eden Alternative Learning Moment

Connectedness is one of the core domains of the Eden Alternative, recognising that rich relationships and meaningful social bonds are central to wellbeing.

For our residents, connection comes through shared experiences, everyday conversations, and the warmth of being part of a community. Families enhance this sense of belonging in simple but profound ways, through visits, shared stories, favourite music, or participating in activities that bring joy and spark conversation. Christmas is a particularly lovely time to nurture these connections, sharing festive moments and creating memories together.

At St Nicholas, we also create opportunities for residents to stay connected beyond their immediate home. Outings, intergenerational programs, cultural celebrations, and community events all help residents maintain social bonds, engage with the wider world, and experience the joy of shared traditions.

By nurturing these moments and relationships, we help ensure our home is not only a place of care, but a place where every resident feels truly known, included, and valued.

It was lovely to welcome the children from the Greek Orthodox Community of St George Sunday School, whose beautiful voices filled our home with Christmas carols and festive cheer. Our residents thoroughly enjoyed singing along, smiling, and soaking up the warmth and joy that Christmas music brings.

Thank you to the children, teachers and families for sharing your time, your music and your Christmas spirit with us. It truly made the season feel extra bright.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has joined Friends of St Nicholas. Your decision to give regularly means so much to our community and makes a genuine difference in the lives of our residents.

Members of our community are pledging monthly donations ranging from $10 to $100, and every contribution is gratefully received as they help us plan and deliver meaningful activities that bring connection, purpose and joy to everyday life.

Did you know? A donation of just $10 a month helps pay for art materials, or supplies for cooking and gardening activities, supporting residents to stay engaged in the things they enjoy. Check out the photos of our green-thumbed residents last week enjoying some garden time .

It's not too late to join and help us reach our target of 100 Friends. Thank you for being part of Friends of St Nicholas and for helping us create moments that truly matter.
