Eden Alternative Learning Moment

Connectedness is one of the core domains of the Eden Alternative, recognising that rich relationships and meaningful social bonds are central to wellbeing.

For our residents, connection comes through shared experiences, everyday conversations, and the warmth of being part of a community. Families enhance this sense of belonging in simple but profound ways, through visits, shared stories, favourite music, or participating in activities that bring joy and spark conversation. Christmas is a particularly lovely time to nurture these connections, sharing festive moments and creating memories together.

At St Nicholas, we also create opportunities for residents to stay connected beyond their immediate home. Outings, intergenerational programs, cultural celebrations, and community events all help residents maintain social bonds, engage with the wider world, and experience the joy of shared traditions.

By nurturing these moments and relationships, we help ensure our home is not only a place of care, but a place where every resident feels truly known, included, and valued.

It was lovely to welcome the children from the Greek Orthodox Community of St George Sunday School, whose beautiful voices filled our home with Christmas carols and festive cheer. Our residents thoroughly enjoyed singing along, smiling, and soaking up the warmth and joy that Christmas music brings.

Thank you to the children, teachers and families for sharing your time, your music and your Christmas spirit with us. It truly made the season feel extra bright.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has joined Friends of St Nicholas. Your decision to give regularly means so much to our community and makes a genuine difference in the lives of our residents.

Members of our community are pledging monthly donations ranging from $10 to $100, and every contribution is gratefully received as they help us plan and deliver meaningful activities that bring connection, purpose and joy to everyday life.

Did you know? A donation of just $10 a month helps pay for art materials, or supplies for cooking and gardening activities, supporting residents to stay engaged in the things they enjoy. Check out the photos of our green-thumbed residents last week enjoying some garden time .

It's not too late to join and help us reach our target of 100 Friends. Thank you for being part of Friends of St Nicholas and for helping us create moments that truly matter.

Christmas Lights Bus Tour? YES PLEASE!!

Last night our residents enjoyed a wonderful bus trip to see the Christmas lights, and the joy was truly shared by everyone. There were plenty of ooohs and aaahs as we took a happy tour of some of the best displays Brisbane has to offer.

It was lovely to see the care, creativity, and effort people have put into decorating their homes and streets. Those twinkling lights brought smiles, laughter, and a real sense of Christmas spirit to our residents.

Activities like this are made possible through our fundraising efforts, especially the support of Friends of St Nicholas, which allows us to plan and deliver uplifting, meaningful, and joyful experiences for those in our care. There is still time to become a Friend of St Nicholas and help us reach our goal of welcoming 100 new donors before 31 December. St Nicholas Day Celebrations – A Wonderful Success

Our St Nicholas Day celebrations were an absolute joy this year, filled with smiles, connection and a true sense of community spirit.

Residents, families, VIP guests, friends and supporters all came together for a beautiful day of celebration. We were honoured to have Fr Athanasiadis and Fr Dimitri with us, whose presence added warmth and meaning to the occasion. It was great to see our local state member, Dr Barbara O’Shea and her husband, Mel, in attendance, showing their support for our community. To get the celebrations underway, our Resident Experience Manager, Fr Stavros, gave an uplifting speech with a warm welcome to all.

The courtyard was buzzing with energy as everyone enjoyed great food, lively entertainment and plenty of fun. Our raffles added extra excitement, and it was heartwarming to see so many people taking part to support the home.

This year’s event was also extra special as we officially launched two meaningful initiatives:

• Friends of St Nicholas, our new regular giving program
• Our Community Recipe Collection, created with love, heritage and the flavours of our community

A heartfelt thank you to The Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society of St George, our many volunteers and the dedicated staff who helped ensure the event ran smoothly. We are also deeply grateful to those who made generous donations to support our work, and to everyone who joined us or contributed in any way. Your kindness strengthens our community in meaningful ways.

Thank you to everyone who made this St Nicholas Day so memorable. Your support helps keep the spirit of St Nicholas alive all year round.

Paws, Claws, and Plenty of Smiles.

At St Nicholas, our furry and feathery friends bring so much joy to everyday life. Watching our residents interact with and care for pets is truly heartwarming. Gentle strokes, playful cuddles, and shared moments are full of connection, laughter, and comfort.

This is at the heart of the Eden Alternative, which believes life in aged care should be full of meaningful relationships, joy, and opportunities for purpose. Caring for pets gives our residents a sense of responsibility, companionship, and delight. Every day is enriched in a simple, powerful way.

Do you have a furry or feathered friend who brightens your day? Share a photo or story with us in the comments.

Today, our residents enjoyed joining Fr Stavros for Spiritual Time. This is a calm and meaningful opportunity to come together.

These gatherings create space for reflection, shared moments and connection, nurturing the spiritual needs of each resident in a way that feels personal and supportive.

We are grateful for the comfort, guidance and presence Fr Stavros brings, and for the sense of peace these moments offer our community.
