Following along with Autism Awareness Day, here are some strategies you can use or habits to be aware of to help people living with Autism when in the community.

🧩Don’t be judgmental, just because they don’t appear ‘disabled’ doesn’t dismiss them or their parents from their feelings and emotions they are experiencing.

🧩Reduce sensory input: Turn down music, dim lights, or help them move to a quieter, less crowded area.

🧩Stay calm and quiet: Avoid talking over them or using a loud voice. Use short, simple sentences or communicate in writing.

🧩Give them space: Do not touch them without permission, as this can heighten sensory stress.

🧩Offer comfort items: If they have a "sensory kit" (noise-canceling headphones, sunglasses, fidget toys, or a comfort object), make it accessible when possible.

🧩Be patient: Allow extra time for them to process information (the "6-second rule") and recover.

We know these strategies aren’t always possible in some circumstances but spreading awareness can be helpful.

We hope this helps, from the CLM Team💜

💙 Autism Awareness Day
Building Understanding, Acceptance, and Support in Our Community.

Today is Autism Awareness Day — an opportunity to learn, reflect, and support autistic people in our community. Greater understanding leads to greater inclusion, and even small actions can make a meaningful difference.

📊 Key Facts About Autism in Australia

🧩Autism is diagnosed more often in males than females.

🧩As of 2022, around 290,900 Australians are autistic, representing 1.1% of the population.

🧩Approximately 4.3% of Australian children aged 5–14 are autistic.

Autism is part of the lives of many families, friends, colleagues, and neighbours. Awareness helps us create environments where autistic people feel safe, respected, and understood.

We hope this helps, from the CLM Team 🧩
