What is Occupational Therapy?

This is a question we get all the time as occupational therapists. It is such a difficult question to answer, we as occupational therapists can be some many things but that is the beauty of the job. This makes it difficult to define in just one sentence.

👐 Occupational therapy is more than just a job, it is about helping people live their lives to the fullest.

👉 Occupational therapy helps individuals of all ages overcome physical, emotional, or cognitive challenges so they can participate in the activities (or occupations as we like to call it) that matter most to them. This can be getting dressed, going to school, working, or simply enjoying a hobby.

💪 As occupational therapists we focus on ability, not disability. Occupational therapy is about empowerment, adaptation, and purposeful living.

🧡 Helping people do what they need, want, and love to do, that is occupational therapy.

OT Week is the annual celebration of the extraordinary impact occupational therapists make every day.

This year’s theme developed by Occupational Therapy Australia is ’Occupational Therapy in Action’. This theme invites us to highlight the creativity, problem-solving, and compassion at the heart of OT practice.

We thank all the occupational therapists in our team and wider community for their hard work and dedication. 💟🎉

🌿CQU OT Graduate Conference 🌿

Last week we had the pleasure of attending the CQU OT Graduate Conference. The Bundaberg and Rockhampton 4th year OT students showcased their hard work and presented on their community projects. A great opportunity for the students to connect with their community and the community to benefit from what they have learnt over the last 4 years of their studies.

A special shout out to Kirralee for supervising 3 of the project groups in Bundaberg. We know her knowledge and guidance were highly beneficial for the students.

Congratulations graduating OT class of 2025, we look forward to working alongside you in 2026. 🎓🎉

Short term accommodation is now called short term respite.

We spoke with participants, families and carers about this change. Most told us that short term respite better reflects the value of informal supports and the importance of sustaining these relationships.

We know some people have concerns about the word ‘respite’, but many carers and families use and understand it well. After considering all the feedback, we chose this name because it’s clear and widely recognised.

Short term respite gives you time away from your usual care arrangements, while your primary informal supports take a short break.

We’ve updated Our Guideline to make it easier for you to understand and use. It explains:

✅ who can use short term respite

✅ what it includes

✅ how it works

✅ where it can be used.
