Possumwood

πŸŽ₯ A short film about 2 of our newest arrival: SPLISH and SPLASH.

Named after the recent torrential rain, SLIPSH the wombat, was found in a shed without her mother. He was bitten up by another male but his wounds are not bad and he's recovering and enjoying a daily cuddle wrapped in his blanket.
SPLASH came in at only 360 gr.
Our philosophy at Possumwood is that everyone deserve a chance. Splish was defenetly one worth try. When he came in he's ears were up and this indicates a very good chance of survival in a macropod pinkie (furless joey) .
Indeed, now he gained nearly 200 gr and as you can see in the video also his eyes are open and ears very lively.

Since in these days we hosted our beloved vets Dr Audrey Shen and her twin Dr Alison Shen , they checked them and made sure everything is fine with them.

I would like to thank everybody that help us, our vets, volunteers and who sustain us.

DEAR OLD DAISY 🌼
ANOTHER WIRE FENCING VICTIM

⛓️ Wildlife not only get caught in wire fences but also in wire fencing which has been left lying around in paddocks. It's not uncommon to be asked to rescue a macropod with wire wrapped around a limb or other part of the body.
Even though she was dragging wire along behind her she was still quite mobile. Luckily we had 7 people to help circle her and an agile volunteer from Uruguay - Fabrizio who managed to grab her with a blanket. The poor girl had likely had the wire around her leg for a week.

🩺 Initially Daisy's leg was cleaned and dressed and she was later treated by Dr Audrey Shen and Aussie Mobile Vet , in charge at Possumwood Veterinary Hospital.
Xrays were taken to check for any fractures of her leg. There were no fractures visible.
The wire had cut quite deep into her skin and leg causing some skin necrosis. Luckily there was only minor injury to her Achilles tendon and the wounds have been debrided and are healing well.
She has been placed on a good antibiotic course to prevent infection and a splint has been placed to allow her tendon to heal.

❗❗Wire injuries can be very severe, cutting off blood supply to the surrounding skin and tissues. Often most of the damage will only be revealed 1-2 weeks later when we can assess what areas are compromised❗❗

Hello guys, today we are showing you a part of an episode of Bondi Vet which shows the surgery of our kangaroo Laurie at Possumwood wildlife rescue centre.

"EVERY LIFE IS A LIFE WORTH SAVING"

We are happy to share with you a story of hope, love and commitment filmed by Bondi Vet at Possumwood.
Our super vet volunteers Dr Audrey Shen and Dr Alison Shen from Aussie Mobile Vet really demonstrate their compassion towards these beautiful creatures and the will of giving them a second chance.
"Fifi", one of our rescues, was brought in with a severe abscess under her chin, preventing her from taking proper care of her joey, little Arthur.
After surgery Fifi and Arthur were kept in care for recovery at possumwood.

Let's share the love that these animals deserve β€οΈπŸ’šπŸ§‘

Fluids, affection and determination are the key to save fence hangers!

"Frida" - a beautiful eastern grey female rescued on Sunday, she was found hanging upside down caught in barbed wire by both legs with her head in the ground.

While the injuries may differ depending on the circumstances, all fence hangers share a specific requirement that must be put in place before considering wounds, fractures, or dislocation: FLUIDS!

Immediate fluids (sodium chloride) are essential as acute pre renal failure due to dehydration is very likely, especially on a hot day. To be expected is also metabolic acidosis due to the accumulation of lactic acid, a result of prolonged extreme exertion; and myopathy, a deadly disease triggered by high level of stress, which causes the use of stored energy in the muscle (anaerobic metabolism), myoglobin will then be released into the bloodstream which can damage the kidneys if not quickly flushed.

Frida was kept alive by administrating subcutaneously 600ml of fluids (NS) and 30ml of sodium bicarbonate to correct the metabolic acidosis. After a few hours her respiratory rate was up to 104 per minute so she was given an intravenous injection of 60ml of fluids (NS) + 10ml of bicarbonate. This was repeated thirty minutes later and the respiratory rate then dropped down to 18 per minute.

Luckily the X-rays show no fractures or dislocation and the wound on her right foot has been nicely cleaned and dressed. Antibiotics were given to prevent possible infections.

πŸ’•πŸ’™ Frida is now doing very well and we are even happier that we were able to save her, knowing she has a pinky in her pouch πŸ’•πŸ’™

Possumwood has over 15 years of experience with fence hangers with 98% of success rate and have developed treatment plans for all types of injuries. Check out our website to learn more and fell free to contact us in case of need.

Special patients deserve special treatments!

"Ernie", a gorgeous golden dingo pup was rescued several months ago by Sydney Dingo Rescue after being poisoned with 1080 poison. The result was kidney and liver damage.

This weekend Ernie received some acupuncture treatment to help with his recovery from kidney failure and promote wound healing of his back legs, a reaction to calcium infusions.

He was given a combination of laser and electroacupuncture from Dr Alison Shen who is a qualified veterinary acupuncturist.

Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is a natural therapy to complement his medical treatments for his kidney desease. Today points were used to "tonify Kidney Qi" and promote blood flow, which will help to regenerate tissue and improve mobility.

Having an X-ray machine is a true privilage.

Today's first patient is "Ally", a female brushtail possum, all the way from Central Coast, with a severe wound on her left back leg. It was thought to be a burn, until she was brought into the hospital.

The X-ray clearly shows an air rifle pellet that has probably entered from the left back leg, got into the abdominal cavity and then out near the pouch. Luckily it has missed all the vital areas and hasn't fractured the spine.

The bullet has been nicely removed and the scar tissue has been broken down by Dr Audrey Shen and her wonderful team of volunteers, Dr Alison Shen, Dr Rhys Donovan, vet nurse/behaviourist Iyona.

Ally is looking good after surgery and should be able to fully recover ❀️

What a great way to start!

Beautiful dingoes from Sydney Fox and Dingo Rescue have been one of our first patients. Thank you to Charlie and Morgan for introducing us to these absolutely loving creatures.
SDR has launched an adoption program for rescued dingoes that need to be rehomed, desexing was needed as they do not support breeding dingoes in captivity.

On this day Dr Audrey Shen and her team conducted impeccable surgery which will be broadcasted on Bondi Vet.
