Functional movement is a big buzz word out there that everyone loves to throw around, but do you know what it actually means?

Functional movement is defined as the ability to maintain efficient mobility and stability along the kinetic chain, while accurately and efficiently completing fundamental movement patterns.

Furthermore, did you know that your diaphragm and proper breathing habits are what actually provide real core strength and spinal stability? This is due to its influence on intra-abdominal pressure creating an even free flow of force through our kinetic chains during movement.

A 2016 paper published in the International Sports Journal of Physical Therapy states that it is possible to re-educate disordered breathing patterns and restore normal motor control habits.

It is recommended that dysfunctional breathing patterns should be at the forefront of orthopaedic testing, because “if breathing is not normalised, no other movement pattern can be.”

So for any clients confused as to why they come in with pain and the first thing I look at is their breathing hopefully this brings you some clarity.

Stress can cause over activity and clenching in the jaw. Overtime this clenching and grinding causes your muscles to spasm, resulting in tension headaches, and back/neck pain.
Here we see some needling to the Pterygoid and Masseter muscles to alleviate the spasms and relax the jaw, followed this up with some scalene soft tissue release and some upper trap needling.
We then went through some breathing techniques to help stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system.

Methylsulfonylmethane, more commonly known as MSM, is a non toxic supplement used to treat a wide array of symptoms and conditions. Scientific literature suggests that MSM can be used as a natural way to relieve joint pain, reduce inflammation and boost immunity.
It is a relatively cheap supplement, that can do wonders for the body.
I have 1/2 tsp with 1 tsp of Vitamin C (this increases absorption) on an empty stomach every morning followed by a cup of bone broth (see below in the posts for recipe).
My joints, hair, skin and nails have never looked or felt better.

Surfing is amazing, it requires flexibility, endurance, power and balance on an ever changing playing field. It covers all movement patterns from rotation to deep squats to opening and closing arcs. It can be calming, it can be wild and it can be unimaginably frustrating, thanks to mother nature’s ability to switch it on and off with the gust of a wind. You can ride long boards, short boards, twin fins, single fins, thrusters, quads or finless, the opportunities for fun are endless. It’s as random as a sport gets which is one of the best ways to stimulate the nervous system.
