Our girls are growing up in a world that moves so fast. Social media, changing bodies, big emotions, sleep struggles, confidence challenges… it’s a lot for young girls to navigate.

I’ve been feeling the importance of creating more intentional spaces for mums and daughters to connect, learn and support each other.

So I’m exploring hosting a Mother & Daughter Self-Care Night for girls around 9–16 and their mums.

It will be a relaxed and nurturing evening where we explore simple tools for:
• mood and emotional wellbeing
• healthy sleep routines
• natural skincare and self-care
• building confidence and body awareness
• calming the nervous system

There will also be some beautiful little experiences throughout the evening so the girls can actually try things and enjoy the process together.

It starts hours earlier with the signals you give your nervous system.

In our modern world we move fast all day, stay stimulated late into the evening, and then expect our body to instantly switch off.

But the body doesn’t work like a light switch.šŸ’”

It responds to cues.

Small evening rituals can make a big difference:
• dim lights as the sun sets
• reduce stimulation at night
• create a slower pace in the evening
• support your nervous system with calming practices

When the body feels safe, sleep naturally follows.

If you’ve been waking between 2–4am, struggling to switch off, or feeling wired but tired, it’s often a sign your nervous system needs more support during the day and evening.

Many people think
ā€œthis is just how my sleep is now.ā€

But often it’s a sign the nervous system is stuck in a stress loop.

Here are a few things that may be happening behind the scenes:

šŸŒ…Nervous system stress

When the body spends too much time in ā€œfight or flight,ā€ the brain struggles to stay in deep sleep.

This doesn’t always look like obvious stress.

It can show up as:
• feeling wired but tired
• tension in the body or jaw
• difficulty switching off at night
• needing constant stimulation during the day
• feeling easily overwhelmed or reactive

When the nervous system is dysregulated, the body has a harder time staying in restorative sleep.

šŸŒ…Cortisol spikes

Cortisol helps wake us in the morning, but stress, illness or blood sugar swings can cause it to spike in the early hours.

This can feel like:
• suddenly waking wide awake
• a racing heart
• feeling alert even though you’re exhausted
• waking at the same time every night

Your body is essentially receiving a wake-up signal too early.

šŸŒ…A busy mind

Many people think their sleep problem is just ā€œoverthinking.ā€

But often the brain is busy because the nervous system hasn’t fully settled.

This can look like:
• replaying conversations from the day
• planning tomorrow at 3am
• feeling like your brain switches on when you wake
• difficulty slowing thoughts at night

šŸŒ…Shallow sleep

Some people technically sleep through the night but never reach deep restorative sleep.

Signs include:
• waking easily from small noises
• vivid dreams all night
• waking unrefreshed
• feeling half awake all night
• needing caffeine to function

Most people experiencing this don’t realise their nervous system is stuck in a stress pattern until they start supporting it.

The good news is the body can relearn deep rest.

Chronic pain is extremely debilitating ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹
