aka “Just Eat Real Food”

A former colleague in the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition world originated the acronym J.E.R.F. a few years back…

It’s brilliant!

His purpose, and one that I’ve adopted wholeheartedly, was to SIMPLIFY nutrition.

If you’ve poked around the interwebs looking for nutrition guidance you’ve no doubt come across a lot of diets... all sounding right.

Confusing?

HELL YEAH! 🙄

The reality is that good, supportive nutrition to lose fat and reverse your inflammation or acid refulx isn’t that complicated.

Perhaps a bit tricky when eating out, I'll agree, but let's focus on the big levers today.
Those who sell you the latest gimmick "detox" want you to think otherwise though. They want you to believe that they finally solved the nutrition mystery for you.

RUBBISH!

At the end of the day for most women who want to lose 10kgs sustainably and feel full of energy again, there’s just really one question you need to ask yourself about your nutrition…

Did I just eat real food today?

In case you’re wondering, a Kit Kat or a KFC meal is not real food. 😅

An easy way to tell if something is a real food is to see if there are any additional ingredients beyond it’s name…

Chicken. One ingredient - chicken.

Pineapple. One ingredient - pineapple.

Avocado. One ingredient - avocado.

Make sense?

For years, I was labelled.

I had a “dancer’s big bum.” (Ten years of classical dance.)
I had “fat arms.” (Thanks genetics.)
“Thunder thighs.”

And an ex once told me I had “cow muscles instead of calf muscles.”

The worst part?
Some of those comments started to feel true.

For two decades — in my so-called “best” years (my 20s & 30s) — I was hyper-aware of my body.
I avoided shorts.
Avoided certain photos.
Avoided angles.
Requested many photo retakes.

Because let’s be honest — our self-esteem is deeply tied to what we see in the mirror… and what people, especially those close to us, say about what they see.

But here’s the deeper truth:

Sometimes the harshest voice isn’t theirs.
It becomes our own. 😩

We start seeing flaws before we see strength.
We focus on what we dislike.
We shrink ourselves — in photos, in rooms, in life.

Then pregnancy changed my body completely.

Stretch marks.
Bigger thighs.
A belly I could rest my teacup on. 🙄

And again, I had a choice about how I was going to see myself.

Something shifted — not just physically, but mentally.

Yes, I wanted to lose the excess weight.
But more than that, I wanted to stop looking at my body through a lens of criticism.

💪 I discovered strength training.
Dumbbells. Barbells. Kettlebells. TRX.
Boxing. CrossFit. Cardio & Yoga.

I didn’t just train — I educated myself.
I got qualified.
I studied nutrition.
I developed my (copyright) “3 Food Rules.”

And here’s what changed everything:

Not punishment.
Not restriction.
Not obsession.

But SMART training + correct food combinations + consistency.

Month after month.
Year after year.
No drama. Just discipline.
It became a ritual ♥️

And slowly, my physique changed.

But something else changed too.

The way I saw myself 😍

Today, I love my legs.
My abs.
My back.
My shoulders.
My strength.

I still eat tiramisu.
I still enjoy nachos.
I still have my favourite comfort meals.

Is our metabolism different in your 40s?
Heck yeah
Are hormones a factor?
100%

But are we powerless?
Absolutely not.

And here’s where I might challenge you a little…

If you truly love yourself — and you’re not happy internally (health) or externally (confidence) — change can come from self-respect, not self-hate.

It is liberating to feel strong.
To feel confident.
To wear what you want without overthinking.
To stop hiding behind others in photos — or in life.

But we are far too critical of our bodies.
That constant criticism? It shapes how we see ourselves — and how we show up.

Maybe today isn’t about changing your body.
Maybe it’s about changing your lens.

Seeing strength instead of flab.
Progress instead of perfection.
Self love instead of self criticism

I walked into my living room and caught my Mauritian rescue dog, Georgette, doing downward dog.

No joke. She was stretched out, perfectly balanced, looking like some kind of furry yoga instructor.

Meanwhile, my husband Gary can barely touch his toes without making noises that sound like a ... never mind 🤣

But here's the weird thing about animals - they never seem to struggle with their weight or flexibility.
