You can love your baby with everything in you and still feel grief sitting quietly beside that love.

Grief for the version of you who existed before. For the ease, the freedom, the body, the expectations you carried into motherhood.

This doesn’t make you ungrateful. It doesn’t mean you’re doing motherhood wrong.

There’s a real, biological transition happening - your hormones, your nervous system, your identity are all rewiring at once. Becoming a mother is a becoming, and every becoming asks us to let something go.

Love and loss are allowed to live in the same body. You don’t have to choose one feeling over the other.

If this resonates, save this for the days it feels heavy.
And if you need support being held through this season - you don’t have to do it alone 🤍

There are so many moments in early parenthood where you wonder if you’re doing things “right”. Feeding, settling, healing, adjusting – it can all feel like a lot to hold at once.

My work is about walking alongside families through these moments. Sometimes that looks like practical, hands-on support. Sometimes it’s education and preparation. Sometimes it’s simply slowing things down and reminding you that what you’re experiencing has a name, a reason, and support available.

I bring over 15 years of experience in maternal and newborn care and hold qualifications including:
-Registered Nurse (RN)
-Registered & Endorsed Midwife (AHPRA)
-International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
-Certified Birth Educator – Hypnobirthing Australia
-Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (TAE40116)
-Tongue Tie Assessor
-Certified Acuneedling for Midwives Practitioner
-Certified Baby & Infant Massage Instructor (CIMI)
-LARC Training Completed

Whether you’re preparing for baby, navigating feeding, caring for your newborn, or finding your feet in the weeks after birth, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Care can be gentle, flexible, and shaped around your needs – not the other way around.

Feeding a baby changes more than their stomach. It shapes the way two nervous systems connect.

During breastfeeding, oxytocin supports closeness and trust, while dopamine helps the brain link feeding with comfort and meaning - the same pathways involved in falling in love.

That chemistry doesn’t need a perfect moment to work. Whether a feed feels tender, tiring, or simply quiet, your body is still supporting attachment in its own gentle way.

We often talk about babies “sucking” milk, but feeding is so much more gentle and so much more complex than that.

Milk transfer is a reflex that involves the tongue, jaw, breath, body alignment, and the nervous system working together. When everything is supported, feeding can feel calmer and more efficient - not because anyone is trying harder, but because the body is doing what it’s designed to do.

If feeding has felt tiring, messy, or harder than you expected, that doesn’t mean your baby isn’t feeding well or that your body isn’t doing enough. It often just means something in the coordination needs a little extra support.

Feeding is learned slowly, in real time, by both of you. There’s space to figure it out and you don’t have to do that alone.

When babies feel overwhelmed, they’re not giving us a hard time - they’re having one.

In these early weeks, their nervous system is still learning how to settle. Until then, they borrow calm from the people holding them. Your touch, your voice, your closeness help their breathing slow, their body soften, and their world feel safer.

If your baby needs a lot of comfort, it isn’t a bad habit or something you’re doing wrong. It’s your baby responding to the safety you offer.

After birth, your body doesn’t just make milk - it changes how your brain responds to the world.

Prolactin rises to support breastfeeding, but it’s also linked to heightened vigilance and protective instincts. For some women, that can feel like irritability, being on edge, or reacting more strongly than usual. It’s not a flaw or a failure - it’s postpartum biology doing its job.

Layer that with exhaustion and constant responsibility, and it makes sense that things feel intense.

If this feels familiar, you’re not alone - and support can make this season feel steadier.

Babies usually whisper their hunger before they cry. It’s subtle. Easy to miss. And often not what we expect in those early weeks.

A turn of the head. A soft, open mouth. Hands drifting toward the face. A little more alertness in their body. These small movements are your baby saying, “I’m ready now.” When we catch these moments early, feeds often feel calmer and more settled for everyone.

Crying tends to come later, when hunger has tipped into overwhelm. If feeding feels harder then, it isn’t a reflection of you or your baby. It’s simply a nervous system asking for help.

Learning your baby’s cues is a process. It unfolds slowly, over days and weeks, and no two babies speak hunger in quite the same way. There’s no timeline to master this. You’re allowed to learn as you go.

Even when your bub sleeps, your body can feel wide awake. After birth, your brain stays hyper-alert, cortisol levels are high, and dropping hormones shift your sleep and energy. It’s your body keeping you and your baby safe - it’s normal, and it’s temporary.

Be gentle with yourself tonight. Every quiet moment, every breath, every tiny nap counts. You are not failing. You are protecting, healing, and doing more than enough.

Save this post for the nights when sleep feels impossible, and remember - you’re not alone in this. Reach out for support or personalised guidance:

When we talk about latch, it’s easy to focus only on the mouth. But from a biological point of view, feeding involves the whole body.

A baby who is well aligned - chest to chest, supported, with their chin contacting the breast - can use gravity, jaw movement, and tongue motion more effectively. This often makes feeding feel calmer and more comfortable for both baby and parent.

I often see feeds improve not by adjusting the ni**le, but by gently adjusting the body. Small changes in position can make a big difference.

If latching feels tricky, it doesn’t mean you or your baby are doing anything wrong. Sometimes the body just needs a little more support.
