🤸 Why is regular exercise important for people living with Down syndrome?

Down syndrome is a genetic condition affecting ~13000 Australians. It involves a degree of intellectual disability as well as developmental delay.

People with Down syndrome have increased rates of physical and mental health conditions compared to the general population with an increased risk of developing many secondary pathologies.

Common secondary conditions experienced in people with Down syndrome include:
• Cardiovascular disease
• Pulmonary hypoplasia (underdeveloped lung)
• Reduced muscle tone
• Osteoporosis
• Osteoarthritis
• Diabetes
• Obesity

The primary cause of these increased rates are physical inactivity and poor nutritional choices.

It is also believed that autonomic dysfunction (dysfunction of the nerves that regulate non-voluntary body functions) may be contributing to reduced aerobic exercise capacity. This would help to explain the increased pathology and cardiometabolic risk factors experienced by people with Down syndrome.

Clinical evidence has indicated that regular exercise benefits the health of people with Down syndrome by improving their:
✅body composition and lean muscle mass
✅aerobic capacity
✅muscle strength
✅proprioception
✅and postural stability.

🧠Research has even shown exercise can have beneficial effects on memory for people with Down syndrome.

🚴Regular exercise is an important part of leading a healthy life and reducing the risk of developing a chronic health condition in people with Down syndrome.

Do you have diabetes and not sure what being insulin resistant actually means? Read below to find out.

💉Insulin is a hormone which regulates the function of many processes in the body. One of these functions is regulating blood glucose levels.

🍞When you eat carbohydrates, they are broken down into glucose which gets absorbed into your blood stream. When blood sugar levels in your bloodstream increase your pancreas secretes insulin to move the glucose from your blood into your cells. Insulin alerts (signals) the cells that glucose is available, and they should unlock the door in the wall of the cell (glucose transporter) to allow glucose to enter the cell.

🎯Insulin sensitivity describes how effectively the body utilises insulin.

⚖️Someone with low insulin sensitivity requires more insulin to lower their blood sugar levels than someone with higher insulin sensitivity.

🧑‍⚕️When we consume too much sugar and live unhealthy lifestyles we become less insulin sensitive (or more insulin resistant). Our cells struggle to "hear" the signal from insulin that is alerting them to open the door (glucose transporter) to move the glucose into the cell.

📈Our bodies then have a harder time getting the glucose out of our bloodstream leading to elevated blood sugar levels.

When our blood sugar stays too high for too long it leads to many serious health problems.
💔Heart disease: high glucose levels damage your heart and blood vessels increasing the risk of heart disease and heart attacks.
🫘Kidney damage: which can lead to renal failure requiring dialysis.
⚡Nerve damage: can be permanent and lead to conditions like peripheral neuropathy.
👁️Vision loss: damages small blood vessels in your eye causing diabetic neuropathy and vision loss.

💪Exercise is a critical component in diabetes management. One reason for this is that exercise IMPROVES insulin sensitivity. Some of the ways it does this include:
✅The act of contracting muscles during exercise opens the glucose 'doors' (transporters) in the cell wall.
✅A series of reactions occur which cause more of these doors to remain open following exercise as well.
✅Improving blood flow in skeletal muscles.
✅Improving the function of the pancreatic cells that secrete insulin.
