Movement it where it all comes together. If you think about how and why the body was designed - it was essentially for survival - finding food, hunting and interacting with the environment. .
All systems within our body, are intricately designed for this purpose. And movement, is where it all comes together - our visual system, our respiratory system, our cardiovascular system, our nervous system, our muscular system etc etc. In fact, the integration and co-ordination of these systems make it hard to dissect the influence of just a singular system on our function. That shoulder pain, for example, will rarely have to do with the shoulder muscles alone. Should you consider the limbic system, which is tied to your emotions? Absolutely! What about respiratory patterns and nervous system drivers? Yep! What about the efficiency of the metabolic systems, gut function and how we access energy from our food? Yes and yes..
Movement dysfunction therefore, becomes an important diagnostic tool, that gives us information about a person's well-being. Corrective exercises need to move beyond the simple concepts of stretching 'tight' muscles and strengthening 'weak' muscles. There is a whole conglomeration of things going on. You my friend, are a moving, exploring, interacting being and OUR role as movement professionals, is to determine what your movement is telling us about you. .
