✨ I am officially endorsed as a Clinical Psychologist, alongside my endorsement as a Counselling Psychologist ✨

I remain deeply grounded in the Counselling Psychology values and ethos that shaped my professional identity — humanism, person-centered, empathic attunement, collaboration; seeing the whole person.

I am grateful for the journey that brought both identities together and the, as yet undiscovered, opportunities that await.

Healthy boundaries are key to emotional well-being, and the “Say, Own, Act” framework is a tool that might aid in effective communication of boundaries.

In Emotion-Focused Therapy, we explore how asserting what we need, honoring our feelings, and effectively reinforcing our boundaries when they are crossed helps regulate emotion, foster our experience of give & take balance in our relationships, and bolster our sense of self-worth.

In Emotion-Focused Therapy, we explore how emotions guide us to understand our needs. Boundaries are one way we honor those needs—by communicating what feels safe, respectful, and supportive in our relationships.

Healthy boundaries create space for connection without losing ourselves. They allow us to say yes wholeheartedly, and no without guilt. In friendships, families, or partnerships, boundaries are acts of self-respect that invite healthier, deeper connections.

In Emotion Focused Therapy, one powerful tool we use is the imagined inner safe place.

This is a guided imagery exercise where you create — in your mind’s eye — a space that feels completely secure, calm, and supportive. It might be a real location you’ve known, like a favourite beach or a cosy room, or something entirely imagined, such as a peaceful forest glade or a sunlit garden.

Your safe place becomes a mental anchor: a resource you can return to when you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally activated. By connecting with this place in session, we can work through difficult feelings while maintaining a sense of stability. Over time, clients often find they can access this safe place outside of therapy, using it to regulate emotions and reconnect with a sense of groundedness.

Within this post, I have included a photograph of my safe place. This creek runs through Arrowtown, outside of Queenstown, in NZ. For me, this place inspires calm, connection to nature and peace.

What might your safe place look like?

When I first began my work as a psychologist, I was drawn to approaches that didn’t just address symptoms, but truly connected with the core of human experience.

Discovering Emotion-Focused Therapy was like finding a missing piece — it offered an evidenced-based way to help people process emotions that prized empathy, holistic case formulation and the lived experience, moment-to-moment, of clients.

Over the years, I’ve witnessed how understanding and working with emotions, rather than against them, can transform lives. I have also learned to celebrate the inner-wisdom within my own emotional landscape. This journey has shaped not only my practice, but also how I live, rest, and care for my own emotional well-being.

Rest isn’t a luxury — it’s an essential part of how we think, feel, and function. When we push ourselves without pause, our nervous system stays in overdrive, making it harder to regulate emotions, think clearly, or respond calmly to stress.

Just like our muscles need recovery after a workout, our minds need downtime to process experiences, restore energy, and find balance. Quality rest — whether it’s sleep, stillness, or simply moments of slowing down — gives our brain the space to reset, improving mood, focus, and resilience.

Without it, we’re more likely to feel overwhelmed, irritable, or burnt out. Rest is not about being lazy; it’s an active investment in your mental health, emotional regulation, and overall well-being. So, give yourself permission to pause — your body and mind will thank you.
