Most of the time it wasn't that movement that caused your back pain, it's been hanging on for dear life and that movement was the last straw.

When I assess clients I'm not focussing on their site of pain at all (much to their frustration!), I identify compensations in their whole body - when I treat and correct the compensations, the strain and burden on the area of pain lifts allowing it to heal and strengthen with the rest of the body.

The area of pain is usually the spot that took the brunt of many compensations throughout the body over months, years or decades. It's usually a smaller joint/ smaller tissues that aren't designed to take the amount of load you are putting through it.

Your glute is the largest muscle in the body and your hip is the largest joint in the body. Your mass should be going through these spots. If it's not, eventually wear and tear will take its toll.

It wasn't lifting up the shopping bags and twisting that did you back in, that was the final straw.

BYE BYE HIP PAIN! HELLO FUNCTIONAL BODY

This client came in with persistent hip pain she's had since 2019. Let's call her Bella 😍

The white line is the gravity line, we like it to pass through the middle of your knee, hip, shoulder and ear hole. When this happens your centre of mass is able to work WITH gravity instead of against it.

Here's what we found:
πŸ‘‰Normal hip tilt is 10Β° on each side. Bella had 15Β° on one and 0Β° on the other. This is a massive hip torsion. This means one hip is going forward and the other backwards.

πŸ‘‰ Normal spine curves are 15Β° at the top, middle and lower spine. Bella had 30Β°top, 10Β°middle, 10Β°lower. Anything 10Β° or less is at a higher risk of injuring a disc ie bulge or hernia, and even sciatica, especially when lifting a heavy load, which Bella was with her weekly deadlifts!

πŸ‘‰ Fascia/ muscular restrictions we found: lower quads, internal hip rotators, hip abductors, pecs, hip flexors, ITB septum, spine rotation

πŸ‘‰ Dysfunctional stability muscles: poor Glute coordination with back and hamstrings, poor Glute max strength, and Bella's loaded lift without losing stability was only 12kg, and she was lifting much heavier than this. Luckily we caught this before more damage was done.

🀩We took Bella through a fascia series to undo restricted tissues throughout her entire body, and combo'd that with progressed exercise programs to build a strong and stable frame for her to work with.

πŸ”₯Hip tilt now at 10Β° on one side and 7Β°on the other. And spinal curves sitting at 20Β°, 15Β° and 20Β° - Congrats Bella for your hard work!!
