Accessibility in the workplace is a right, not a privilege. Yet for people living with vision loss, barriers persist across every stage of employment, from inaccessible hiring software to a lack of workplace accessibility.

This week, SeeWay and Guide Dogs NSW/ACT had the chance to raise these issues with Dan Repacholi MP and Senator Dorinda Cox, who generously took the time to engage in this important conversation around advocacy for inclusive workplace and employment policies across Australia.

Inclusive workplaces benefit everyone. When employers are accessible, they widen their talent pool to a group of potential employees who are adaptable, strategic and highly motivated.

A loss of vision needn’t mean a loss of employment. Learn more about accessible workplaces at https://lnkd.in/g5UxvNzq or join the Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Inclusive Employment Campaign at https://lnkd.in/gmCYZHjY.

At the Southport Seniors Expo, one message was clear – when adjusting to changes in your vision, support looks different for everyone.

For one man who had recently experienced vision loss related to macular degeneration, having a trusted source of information outside of his doctor’s appointment was most important.

“It was a big change,” he said, “but I’m excited to see how SeeWay can help me stay informed about ways to adapt my daily routine and hobbies as my vision changes.”
For others, it was being able to connect regularly with loved ones with technology through digital skills training, or speaking to a counsellor who truly understands the emotional impact of vision loss.

Whatever support looks like for you, SeeWay connects you to it. With practical lifestyle advice, mental wellbeing services, and digital skills training, SeeWay is your link to what matters most to you.

Access support today. Visit www.seeway.com.au or call 1800 733 929.

When receiving a diagnosis like macular degeneration or glaucoma, the next steps forward might not always be clear. Your eye care professional may advise you on options for managing your condition, but adjusting to low vision is about more than the clinical side, it’s a personal journey of lifestyle and emotional adaption that happens every day.

For SeeWay Client Suzi, it was difficult to know where to start. Friends and family would offer their help, but she didn’t have an answer for them. “I didn’t know what I needed,” said Suzi.

With time, Suzi found the most valuable support for her was finding new ways to keep doing things herself. By learning new digital skills to keep doing what mattered most to her, Suzi stayed connected to her friends and family, making a huge difference to her everyday life and sense of self.

Every journey with low vision looks different, but SeeWay is a place to begin. If you’ve been diagnosed with a low vision eye condition, SeeWay supports you to keep doing what matters most to you.

Starting a new job or navigating changes at work can feel daunting for anyone. When you’re living with low vision, this can be amplified by uncertainty about how much to disclose, available support, and how to advocate for your needs with confidence and clarity.

SeeWay Client Bella has shared her some insights from her experience working with low vision in the workplace. Her words offer an honest look at the barriers that can arise, but also the adjustments that may truly help and the power of clear, respectful communication.

Across Australia, employers are searching for people who can think clearly under pressure, learn fast, adapt to change and bring fresh, practical thinking to complex problems. What many don’t realise is that these qualities are often inherent in candidates who live with low vision or blindness.

Navigating without vision or with low vision, environments that often aren’t designed with accessibility in mind requires planning, resilience, problem-solving and the ability to process large volumes of information quickly – all the skills workplaces value most.

Learn more about the untapped strengths of employees with low vision or blindness by reading our article at www.seeway.com.au/a-note-to-employers/.

Tips for staying connected this holiday season
For many people adjusting to changes in their vision, the holidays can bring a mix of joy, exhaustion, connection, or loneliness, and often all at once. Small things can help:

- Let people know what lighting or seating helps you feel comfortable. Most friends or family appreciate clear guidance.
- Make a simple list of the events that matter most to you and focus your energy there. It might be the local Christmas carols, a longer phone chat with a dear friend or making your favourite dish.
- Remember: connection can be a walk, a chat, or sharing a cup of tea, not just big gatherings.
