We’re excited to introduce you to Stacey from SMC Physio! This lady is the best in the biz when it comes to all things mumma body problems and is ready to help you!

“Hi, my name is Stacey McKenzie, I am a physiotherapist and owner of SMC Physio where I work predominantly with pregnant and postpartum women. With motherhood comes so much joy but also some challenges and I am passionate about helping women through these! From ab separation, a weak pelvic floor, incontinence to returning to exercise I'm here to help 😊”

STOP getting stuck in this cycle!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Strengthening your pelvic floor is much like the bad habits we make when working out...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We start off great, start seeing some results, get side tracked, stop, put weight back on and then start working out again 🤦‍♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sound familiar??
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The pelvic floor is much the same!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You might not need to work on it every day for the rest of your life BUT the strength and function of your pelvic floor is something you should aim to maintain and improve when needed! 🙌✨

⚡️How To Check Your Ab Separation ⚡️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1️⃣ Lay on your back with your knees up.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2️⃣ Place your fingers in the middle of your tummy just above the belly button. Have them lined up in the direction of your six pack muscles (trust me, they're there!), with your middle finger on the midline.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3️⃣ Do a small crunch. With your fingers, feel the gap and measure it using the number of fingers that fill the gap horizontally. Take note of the depth too.

And that's it!

To watch a video on this, check an earlier post of mine titled 'How to Check Ab Separation' and I demonstrate how to do it.

Still not sure? Book in with a physio to get assessed! ☺️✨

Psst... wanna know a secret? 🤫
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Preventing and managing a prolapse can be done by following a treatment plan that includes:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1️⃣ PROLAPSE PRECAUTIONS - E.g:
- Avoiding high impact exercise
- No straining/pushing at the toilet
- Practicing ‘the knack’
- Managing your stool type
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2️⃣ PELVIC FLOOR STRENGTHENING
- Increase strength of your pelvic floor
- Training it with pulses and holds
- Learning to strengthen and relax the pelvic floor
- Practicing coordination of the pelvic floor
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s the combination of these two treatments that will best manage and prevent a prolapse!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Remember- this is a VERY broad summary with some specific treatment examples 👍
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you have a prolapse or want to learn more about how to prevent one, send me a message and I can help ☺️✨

⚡️ Is Pilates good for the pelvic floor? ⚡️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The short answer...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
HELL YEAH! 🤩
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Most (if not all) Pilates exercises require you to activate your pelvic floor. If you’re not, then I hate to be the one to tell you but you’re likely not doing the exercise well!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(So how do you know if you’re activating your pelvic floor? Check out an earlier post I did on this! 👈)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you start, work one on one with a Pilates instructor to make to make sure you’re doing the exercises well and activating your pelvic floor.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So once you can activate your pelvic floor and your instructor is happy with your technique- you are on your way to a functional pelvic floor-
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That means every time you do Pilates, you’ll be working on your pelvic floor! 🙌
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Awesome, right?!
