🎅 CHRISTMAS PET SAFETY 🎅

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! A busy house full of guests and noise can be very stressful for animals, and all those tempting decorations and foods can pose significant risks.
Help your pet have a healthy and happy Christmas by following these six tips:

🔴 If you’re hosting celebrations, exercising your pets before your guests arrive can help them de-stress and make them more likely to nap once the festivities are underway.

🟢 Create a safe, quiet place for your pet to relax away from the party. Even the most social creatures need a break sometimes.

🔴 Christmas food includes some of the most dangerous foods for animals to consume and can be fatal so don’t give in to those pleading looks!
Particularly, do not let your pets anywhere near alcohol, avocado, chocolate, Christmas pudding, coffee, cooked bones, currants, fruit cake, grapes, gravy, ham, lollies, macadamia nuts, marinades, onion, pork, raisins or sugarless gum.

🟢 Keep Christmas decorations out of reach. A dog or cat may think the baubles hanging from the tree look conveniently like toys or tennis balls – but if a plastic or glass ornament breaks in their mouth, it could cause serious damage. Edible decorations like candy canes can also pose a risk. It’s best to hang anything risky near the top of the tree.
If your feline friend is fascinated by the tinsel or tree lights, keep an eye on these too, to avoid the risk of choking or electric shock.

🟢 Clean up wrapping paper quickly after presents have been opened. If chewed, wrapping paper and ribbons can prove dangerous for a pet’s intestines.

🔴 Don’t forget to give your pet a special Christmas treat! Your pet needn’t miss out on all the festive cheer - you can have some fun with this one. You could create a treasure hunt of dry food or treats around the house or yard, whip up some pupcakes, make them their favourite Kong, or take some time to play their favourite games with them.

Wishing you all a very safe and Merry Christmas 🎄🎁

🐾 Stella’s BOAS Journey 🐾
Many French Bulldogs experience breathing difficulties due to Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome.
You may remember gorgeous Stella from our post about bladder stones. Stella nostrils were too narrow to let in enough air.
Our team performed a wedge resection to widen her nostrils and help her breathe freely.
This routine surgery can greatly improve comfort, reduce snoring, and help brachycephalic pets live happier, healthier lives. 💛✨

🚨TICK SEASON IS HERE 🚨

Paralysis tick season is upon us! Our veterinarians recommend that all pets use an appropriate tick preventative all year round, but especially during tick season (August to March).

If left untreated, tick paralysis can be fatal. It is extremely important to seek immediate veterinary care or advice if you notice any of the following symptoms:
🚨 Difficulty Breathing
🚑 Collapse
🚨 Weakness
🚑 Uncoordination
🚨 Vomiting or retching
🚑 Unusual Vocalisation

If you live in NSW, especially on the Eastern Coast, we recommend you familiarise yourself with the three most prevalent ticks in this area so you will be better able to distinguish when your pet may be in danger.

If you are concerned that your pet may be suffering from tick paralysis, please do not hesitate to contact us on (02) 9548 3345 for advice or information regarding preventative treatments.

🍽️ MOCHI’S BIG FOOD ADVENTURE 🍽️
Some of you may have met Dr Julie's Toy Poodle Mochi. While she may be small in stature, she has a big appetite!
Miss Mochi very sneakily got into an entire bag of dog food and really overdid it. She came in retching and with an uncomfortable, bloated belly.
X-rays confirmed food bloat, and we helped her feel better by making her safely bring up the extra kibble.
She’s now back to her happy self — and hopefully sticking to normal portions! 😉🐾

🚨CANINE PARVOVIRUS ALERT🚨

There have been a number of confirmed cases of Canine Parvovirus (CPV) reported in the Wollongong area recently and we want to keep you informed about how to keep your pet protected.

What is Parvovirus? 🦠
A highly contagious viral disease affecting dogs - especially puppies between 6 weeks and 6 months of age. It attacks the cells in the intestinal tract, bone marrow, and in very young pups, even the heart. Without treatment, it can be life threatening!

How is it Spread? ⚠️
Parvo is transmitted through contact with infected faeces or contaminated surfaces - and it can survive in the environment for months.

Early Symptoms to Watch For:
❗️Lethargy
❗️Loss of Appetite
❗️Fever

Progressive Symptoms:
❗️Vomiting
❗️Severe or Bloody Diarrhoea
❗️Abdominal Pain
❗️Dehydration and Rapid Weight Loss

In advanced cases, collapse and dangerously low white blood cell counts may occur. Symptoms usually appear 3-7 days after infection.

✅ VACCINATION IS THE BEST PROTECTION
✅ Keep up with booster vaccination schedules
✅ Practice strict hygiene, especially in public dog areas

If you notice any symptoms or have concerns about your dog’s vaccination status, please contact your regular vet or nearest emergency vet immediately.

💛 Meet Stella 💛

Stella first presented with dark urine and increased urination. We collected a sample of her urine which our vets looked at under a microscope, in a test called cytology. This confirmed the presence of bacteria that was causing a urinary tract infection. We started Stella on anti-biotics but this did not resolve the issue. To investigate further, we performed an ultrasound and X-rays — and found bladder stones!
Stella had a bladder surgery called a cystotomy to remove the stones and is now feeling so much better! 🐶✨

🦷✨ Honey’s Dental Day! ✨🦷

Sweet Honey the Cavalier came in for her routine dental clean — and as always, she was an absolute angel. 💛🐾

During her exam under anaesthesia, we noticed some discoloration and slight movement in two teeth. Dental X-rays revealed the real issue: both teeth had fractured roots that couldn’t be seen just by looking in the mouth.

This is a perfect reminder of why dental exams under anaesthesia and full-mouth dental X-rays are so important. Many painful dental problems are hidden beneath the gumline, and without imaging, they can easily be missed.

Thanks to her dental X-rays, Honey received the treatment she needed to keep her mouth healthy and comfortable. 💕
