You may have heard the term, “Skin Cancer Doctor”

Typically, this refers to a medical doctor who has undertaken additional focused training in skin cancer detection and management, often including dermatoscopy, biopsies, and surgical excisions.

Many come from a General Practice background and develop a strong subspecialised focus.

Medicine is often collaborative. Understanding the training pathway helps you choose wisely.

GPs are often the first point of contact.
Skin cancer doctors focus specifically on detection and treatment.
Dermatologists complete formal specialist training in all skin diseases.

But what matters most isn’t the title, it’s careful examination, appropriate tools, experience, and clear follow-up.

Understanding who does what helps you make informed decisions. And informed decisions are powerful.

General Practitioners receive training in recognising suspicious lesions, performing biopsies and managing common skin cancers
In fact, the majority are diagnosed and treated in primary care.

However, experience may vary depending on if further training has been undertaken.

Early melanomas and atypical lesions can be small, lack pigment, or mimic harmless spots.

Diagnosis often relies on pattern recognition built over years of practice.

What matters most:
• Clinical experience
• Appropriate tools (e.g. Dermatoscope)
• Accreditation and additional training
• Thorough examination
• Clear follow-up when required

Choosing an experienced, accredited doctor can improve detection and treatment outcomes.

UV radiation penetrates the skin and can cause DNA mutations

Normally, the body repairs this damage, but repeated exposure can overwhelm these safeguards

Over time, damaged cells may multiply without normal control.

Understanding how skin cancer develops helps us focus on prevention and early detection.

The ABCDE guide is a helpful way to assess moles at home

• Asymmetry
• Border irregularity
• Colour variation
• Diameter
• Evolving or changing

However, some melanomas may not show obvious ABCDE features

Self-checks are good, but they don’t replace professional medical assessment.

If you notice change, growth, new symptoms, or a spot that stands out, seek medical advice.

Sun spots, moles and melanomas can, at times, overlap in appearance, particularly in the early stages

One key point that often surprises patients:
Most melanomas arise de novo (on previously normal skin)

This means monitoring only “old moles” isn’t enough. Awareness of:
• New spots
• Subtle change over time
• A lesion that looks different from your other marks

Early assessment doesn’t create fear, it provides answers.

It always helps to have a medical professional who will keep track.

Why is it so difficult to tell skin spots apart?

Many harmless spots and serious ones overlap in appearance. Early skin cancers can look subtle, familiar, or “normal enough” to the naked eye.

There is no single classic look.

Skin cancers can be:
• Flat or raised
• Dark, light, red, or skin-coloured
• Smooth, rough, scaly, or scar-like
• Painful, or completely painless

That’s why professional assessment is important. Doctors look at:
• Pattern and change over time
• Subtle structural details not visible to the naked eye
• Age, skin type, and individual history

It’s not worth taking a risk when clarity can bring relief.

If something has changed or feels uncertain, having it assessed provides answers, not assumptions.
