Last night we marked the end of the year with a team celebration, beginning with an escape room for those who were able to attend, followed by dinner with more of the team joining us.

Although not everyone was able to be there, all members of the team were very much part of what we were celebrating. This year has been one of significant growth, collaboration, and commitment to high-quality care, and that is entirely due to the people who make up this team.

Thank you to our team for all of your hard work and contributions this year. We look forward to what we will continue to build together in the year ahead.

Last night's Slices of Science event was led by psychologist Daelin Coutts-Bain. Daelin shared insights from his PhD research exploring the question many people silently hold about their mental illness: “What if it comes back?”

The discussion covered themes of shame, trauma, and the ways people can misinterpret everyday experiences of being human, like a dip in mood or an intrusive thought. Daelin's research revealed that even small emotional fluctuations like these can be misinterpreted as signs of decline, fuelling anxiety and avoidance.

At the Menzies Anxiety Centre, Slices of Science allows us to bring research and clinical practice closer together, over shared discussion and slides of pizza. This ensures our team always stays up to date with the latest scientific findings.

A big thank you to Daelin for such a thoughtful and important discussion, and for his contributions to the field. We are very proud to have one of the world's research leaders on fears of mental health relapse on our team!

Our director Dr Rachel Menzies presented some of her latest research this week at the Australian Association for Cognitive and Behaviour Therapy (AACBT) conference in Fremantle.

In collaboration with Honours student Charlotte Briggs, the project explored the impact of psychologists' own death anxiety on their ability to recognise it in clients.

It was a wonderful opportunity to share their new findings with clinicians and researchers from across Australia, and to highlight the growing recognition of existential concerns as a vital part of psychological wellbeing.

Our team has published a new review in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research, showing how death-related worries often sit beneath fears of physical illnesses returning or worsening.

Why does this matter? Recognising these concerns can improve assessment and treatment planning, to better support both patients and families.

If you or someone you know is struggling with ongoing health worry, get in touch with us today to learn more.

A mini MAC day out! 🧠

Director Dr Rachel Menzies, Practice Manager Claudia Lyndon, and Psychologist Audrey Bennett spent the day at the Sydney Anxiety and OCD Conference.

They learned from leading experts about the latest research and treatment approaches for anxiety and OCD.

Our team love connecting with other clinicians, sharing knowledge, and bringing fresh, evidence-based strategies back to the Menzies Anxiety Centre to better support our clients.
