Behind every wagging tail and happy reunion is a team of incredible humans — and today we’re shining the spotlight on one of our absolute gems, Mel 💛

Mel is a long-time volunteer and a truly special part of the Don't Forget My Pet family. Whether she’s lending a hand behind the scenes, supporting pet parents through tough times, or sharing her endless kindness with every furry friend she meets, Mel brings heart, warmth and a whole lot of compassion to everything she does.

It’s people like Mel who make our community so strong — showing up, stepping in, and reminding us what kindness in action really looks like.

Thank you, Mel, for being such an important part of our journey. We’re so lucky to have you 🐾

Happy Chinese New Year! (17 Feb -3 March)

Last year — the Year of the Snake — felt like a time of shedding for so many of us. Letting go, growing through challenges, and finding new strength (even when it wasn’t easy).

This year is the Year of the Horse — a symbol of energy, freedom and moving forward with purpose. But around here, we like to think of it as the Year of the Unicorn… because why not add a little extra magic?

May the year ahead be filled with hope, kindness, courage and a few sparkly moments when you need them most. Here’s to galloping into a brighter, more magical year together.

Dallara’s Little Holiday!

Dallara the cat did not pack a suitcase, or leave a forwarding address.

She simply blinked her big golden eyes, gave one polite stretch, and decided that if her dad needed time to get better, she would bravely hold the fort elsewhere.

Right now, Dallara is staying with one of our beautiful foster carers while her dad focuses on his health. And while she misses him (especially his very specific chin scratches and the way he says her name), she knows this is just a chapter — not the whole story.

At her foster home, Dallara has claimed a sunny windowsill, supervises tea-making from the kitchen bench, and has already trained her foster carer in the fine art of “exactly five pats, pause, then continue.” She is gentle, wise, and just a little bit bossy — as all great queens are.

But behind her calm purr is something bigger.

It is incredibly hard to leave your pet, even temporarily. For so many people facing illness, hospital stays, or unexpected life changes, the biggest worry isn’t themselves — it’s “Who will look after my animal?”

And too many people don’t reach out for help because they don’t have a plan.
Animals give us so much love. They sit with us on hard days. They curl up beside us when the world feels heavy. They don’t judge. They don’t rush. They just stay.

Dallara’s dad made the brave choice to accept support, knowing she would be safe and loved until they are reunited. That’s what community is. That’s what a plan can do.

Until then, she will nap. She will supervise. She will love her foster carer kindly.

Because that’s what animals do.
They love us — through every chapter. 💛

We couldn’t do this without our community, so if you can support us with volunteering or donating, please go to www.dontforgetmypet.org.au

HAHA poor Nelly out here with a reputation to maintain 💨😂

Smelly Nelly’s farts used to be the kind that made you question your life choices… eyes watering, windows opening, pets blaming each other — absolute biohazard level stuff. 🚨

BUT we’ve been giving his tummy a little extra love with VetaFarm Synbiotic, and let’s just say… the air quality in the house has improved dramatically. It’s not perfect — we still have the occasional “who did that?!” moment — but we’re no longer evacuating the building on a daily basis 😅

Happy gut = happier pup (and MUCH happier humans). If your pet’s backside is committing crimes against humanity, it might be time to show their tummy some love too 💚🐶

Meet Tyrion — the cutest little pup with the biggest heart 🐾

Tyrion came to stay with us while his dad takes the brave step of getting the help he needs. When his dad became unwell, the most important thing to him was knowing Tyrion would be safe, loved, and well cared for.

That’s where our amazing foster carers stepped in 💛
They’ve been giving Tyrion all the cuddles, walks, and reassurance he deserves — while his dad focuses on getting better.

We're glad we had availability to help Tyrion and his Dad — and it’s a reminder of how important it is for pet parents to have a plan in place for moments like this 🐾

We’ll be cheering for both of them every step of the way ✨

Okay but HOW good are kids at art these days?! 🎨🐾

We’ve absolutely loved seeing the entries from the kids colouring competition at Newtown Vet for Don’t Forget My Pet — the creativity is next level!

Special mention has to go to the masterpieces where Digga somehow transformed into a Golden Lab 😂💛 We’re not sure how he feels about the makeover, but we are VERY impressed with the skills. The colours, the details, the confidence… future artists in the making for sure.

Honestly, every single entry has made us smile. Choosing a winner is going to be so hard.

Which one do YOU think should win? Drop your favourite in the comments 👇🐶✨

Part Two

This is Matt — Daniel’s friend.

When the fire next door broke out, Daniel lost the ability to stay in his home. There was no time to prepare, no plan, just suddenly being homeless. Some of the services that should have helped him weren’t able to, and it was heartbreaking to watch him fall through the cracks.

But even in all of that, Daniel wasn’t focused on himself. He kept asking about his three cats. Were they safe? Where were they? Could they stay together?

That’s when we were able to step in. When Daniel needed support and had nowhere to turn, we were able to ensure he didn’t have to choose between getting help and protecting the animals he loves.

Because to Daniel, his cats aren’t just pets — they’re his family 🐾💛

We are so incredibly grateful for our community 💛

A huge thank you to everyone who keeps donating pet food into the collection bin at Bunnings Waurn Ponds. Every bag, tin, and treat goes directly towards helping families who are doing it tough and keep food in the bowls of their beloved pets.

To you, it might be an extra item in your trolley — to someone else, it’s the relief of knowing they don’t have to choose between feeding themselves or their pet. That kindness matters more than you know.

Your ongoing support is what allows us to keep showing up for people and their animals when life takes an unexpected turn. We see your generosity, and we appreciate it so much. Thank you for caring 🐾💛

Oh this is such a special one 🥹🐾

We’re feeling very seen (and a tiny bit famous) because Don’t Forget My Pet has been featured in Northerly Aspect! How lovely is it when our little charity gets a moment in the spotlight. Recognition like this helps more people understand what we do — and why keeping people and their pets together (or cared for) in tough times matters so much.

The photo featured is our incredible volunteer Mel and her beautiful girl Poppy. Mel has been with us since close to the beginning and is one of those absolute heart-humans who just quietly shows up, loves big, and gets things done. We honestly couldn’t do this without people like her.

You’ll also see Barbara and Sebastian pictured — a story close to our hearts.

Barbara became very unwell and was admitted to hospital, and we stepped in to care for her beloved Sebastian. We made sure he was safe, loved, and even took him in to visit Barbara. Sadly, Barbara wasn’t able to return home, and Sebastian was already a very old boy. He spent the rest of his days wrapped in love with us.

These are the stories behind the work. This is why we do what we do. And we’re so grateful to Northerly Aspect for helping share it 🤍🐶

Thank you to everyone who supports, volunteers, donates, and cheers us on — this recognition belongs to you too.

Yesterday at the Bunnings BBQ was an absolute vibe 🌭🔥

We love getting on the tongs, serving up snags, and soaking up the community spirit — there’s just something special about a Bunnings sausage sizzle day. But if we’re honest… the best part isn’t the food.

It’s all the adorable four-legged visitors who stop by for pats on their way past 🐾💛

Our highlight? Frankie the Golden Lab, who fell in love with us and very seriously considered not leaving 😂 She came over for a sniff, stayed for the cuddles, and looked pretty convinced she’d found her new home. Honestly Frankie, same.

Nothing like a day of sausages, smiles, and surprise puppy therapy. Thanks to everyone who came by to support us — and bonus points to those who brought dogs for cuddles. That’s the real payment if you ask us 🐶✨
