As the year progresses, many children (and parents!) are already running on empty. It’s been a big year, and the next few months can feel even bigger. There’s Christmas excitement in the air, graduations, end-of-year concerts, birthdays, and a full calendar of change and emotion.
It’s no surprise that many kids start showing signs of tiredness, overwhelm, or anxiety right about now. And when their world feels loud or unpredictable, even the kindest, most well-intentioned words can sometimes feel like too much.
Now is the season for connection over correction – and a great time to practise using low-demand language with your family. This gentle way of communicating can reduce stress and support regulation, helping your child feel understood and regulated as the unfolds.
Here are a few simple ideas to try this week:
✅ Swap questions for comments. Think “I'm heading to the car now," instead of “Can you please get in the car?”
✅ Swap verbal instructions for friendly gestures - like opening your arms instead of asking for a hug
✅ Turn tricky tasks into a game where possible
✅ Share the load. Instead of “Time to pack your bag,” try “I’ll grab your lunchbox while you find your hat.”
